    Changing engine mount...

    Hello everyone !

After a few months of intensive use of my power upgrade, the car's now developed a bad vibration when turning left only and only on hard acceleration... Had a look around and I surprisingly found that I could lift the engine with one hand only when pulling on the IM towards the turbo side of the engine
A friend looking at the mount could see me lifting it ( or lifting the engine support arm from the mount ) by about 3-4mm

My engine mount is shot I think....

Anyone changed one of these before WITHOUT taking the engine out ?

If not, I'll be sure to post some pics of when I'll be attempting the job

Any help beforehand would be, as usual, very appreciated !

    Thanx in advance !

Think it should be possible to change since the bolts can be undone and lifted off as long as the engine is supported while you do it

The only issue you will have is access to the top nut on the mount as space is limited.

Make sure you support the engine when undoing the mount, as you assemble it all back up make sure you remove the support before tightening the top nut.

        Thanx Greg and Corey !

Luckily, it's the mount on the rad side of the engine so there's a fair amount of space to work within....

Part will be ordered tomorrow and fitted asap ( last parts ordered - all 4 suspension bushes, took 40 days to arrive ), until then, I'll just keep the throttle in check and drive like a grandma

If that side has gone I would be very surprised if the other side hasn't gone the same way, unless it has been replaced recently.
Got a nice pair of 034 solid engine mounts if you don't want to wait 40 days?

I changed my Engine mounts ( with standard ones) not too long ago and ther shot already. Gotta do them again with 034 upgrades this time !!

rad side one is not too bad .. get a jack under the engine and gearbox to support.
turbo side is harder if your turbo and manifold is in the way.

I can attest that this can be done... I changed the turbo-side engine mount. Never got to replace the other side

                  Process went something like:

                  -Support engine
-Remove top nut (needed extension with a u-joint in the middle to thread past wg pipe)
-Bottom nuts were very awkward, only had a few degs of movement. If you can get in with a deep socket, it's much quicker!
-Had to jack the car up to allow enough clearance to drop the mount out.
-In true form, the new mount went back in no problems and took 1/10th the time it took to remove the old one

If I were to do it again, I'd probably unbolt the oil cooler and drop the bumper to get some better access! Would have saved the crinked neck.

                  Cheers

I'll be sure to post a feedback on how different the new 034 hardened engine mounts feel compared to sloppy bashed stock ones

Will be interested to see how the 034 mounts serve you.

When I changed the mounts, other than the deafening vibration from the turbo-chassis contact having dissapeared, the only real difference was that the gearbox felt 'newer' - wasn't as sloppy on a gear change. The new mounts raised the engine about a half and inch, so it makes sense that perhaps the box was pulled up a little tighter on it's old mounts.

so the 034 mounts solved your clearance issues with your turbo?
