  • S6 V10 in a B3/B4?

An entirely hypothetical question.... We all know the audi V8 fits quite snugly in a B-chassis car, but how much longer is the V10, and does anyone reckon it is possible with a front mounted radiator? Appreciate there would be surgery to the front crossmember, but that is not a problem for most people.....

I've Googled a bit but come up short, so thought I would ask on here

It would surely be comparable to the I5 in "length" from the gearbox?

The W12 would be shorter though

    Jase.

Yeah, that was my thought too, so a bit of chopping and a slim wide radiator and it may squeeze in....

W12 - well, having seen the W12 golf made in the factory, mid engine and a complete handful, I suspect the weight of the engine may be even more than the V10,but perhaps not, no idea

        V10 critical specs:

approx. 220 kg (485 lb) length: 685 mm (27.0 in), width: 801 mm (31.5 in), height: 713 mm (28.1 in) with all components

        W12:

        Weight 245kg, length: 513 mm (20.2 in), height: 715 mm (28.1 in), width: 710 mm (28.0 in) then 690 mm (27.2 in)

        *edit* weight now added....

V8 (32V) barely fits because of the cooling pipes in front of the engine. V10 is 1,5cyl longer (cylinders are bit offset), then there's stuff in front of it and then try to close the bonnet. I'd say it's no go.
It does fit in C4 tho

              Weight added above now.

So, aside from the 25kg weight penalty, seems like the W12 could win that one, being 170mm shorter(!), better weight distribution too.

Gearbox options.... I have no idea for either! Guess it depends if they went with the old-time bellhousing pattern or something newer.

I have spent too much time thinking about putting a Bi-turbo V10 mid-engined in a coupe, with proper suspension. One day I will have the time to actually do it.

Someone managed it in a golf:

Aside from the bonnet, some lovely work.

Mid engined would be awesome! But not great for the road I guess

Looks like the drive flanges are way forward under the engine compared to an I5 setup in our cars, gonna make the steering tight, but would free up space up front.

                    Might need some firewall massaging!

As a power plant, the V10s aren't bad value, a few around at under £4k...

They could go where the middle silencer normally would be.
