Always strikes me as a somewhat ridiculous debate...

Two cars with the same horsepower weighing the same, at speeds where the significance of drag is minimal, will accelerate at similar speeds.

My guess is that the stripped out, turbo-charged 360hp S2 (CSL probably 150kg lighter?) will always feel faster than the NA CSL because of the variation in torque delivery.

The CSL wins out at the end of the day because the drag coefficient is lower (?).

If you want a car which will lap the Ring quick, my guess is all the fastest cars will be NA'ed cars. Horse power is king.

If you want a car which will perform a WRC stage quick (i.e., get from A to B on real world roads quick), it'll be no surprise turbo-charged cars such as the STi's and EVO's deliver the goods. Torque is king.

What I want is loads of both.

Just reading some article about the Mitsubishi EVO FQ340 MR. This wheighs about the same, so would performance be similar? Except for active diff launches that is...
        0-60 5 sec ?
        0-100 11-12 sec ?
        60-100 6-7 sec ?
        160 mph ?
        qm 13-14 sec ?

had a go with an FQ300 with a chip and air filter the other night.he said it's about 350.i think i must have scared 300 of those away when i got the jump on him at the lights.i had my foot slightly on the clutch in second 'cos it was screaming and i wasn't getting very far and he missed second anyway.then we got side by side with me in third(and i guess he was too)he slowly pulled away till the top end when i started reeling him back in again.he said 'that's f*cking rapid.you bet your sweet *** darling.

You can get a set of rods for such a good price these days its not worth not putting them in.
Mine feels quick with around 360hp on an RS2 turbo, I think a 3071 running 400+ would be pretty cool. Would boost up quick and keep on pumping at the top end.

With only stage 1+ (chip + exhaust)?

Yes I am still(!) awaiting some offers regarding the extra labour involved in this (it is more work no doubt). Otherwise maybe some ARP conrod bolts (if they are indeed better). Funny enough I get some pretty outragous prices for some conrods, like 400 euro each, thats 2.000 euro! Okay this was Carillo, but extreme it is! Arrows also kind of expensive. I also hear lot of rumors regarding cheap conrods that are stronger, but have bad quality in terms of equal sizing, so you will ruin bearings and so... BTW I don't know if the Audi are forged or something...

Since you are taking the head off to change the head gasket, and the sump off to change the rod bearings, you can just pull the rods and pistons out the top, change the rods and fit new rings and away you go, hardly any extra work, just make sure the rods are balanced to be all the same weight. Its not the bolts that fail on the stock rods, its the rods that bend.

I am in a bit of two minds with this one... My coupe has about 280 brake, with 300 Lb/ft... always feels so slow when compared with the Jap stuff I am used too.... So much so I got a health check done by MRC and all was well... I also dont know which Evos or Subarus you guys race, but a stage one STI (proper jap spec, not the crappy euro stuff) will easily outpull mine....
Unless i throw a huge amount of money at it I dont believe it is ever going to be genuinely quick... just reasonable for the money... I know I will never go as quick or have anywhere near as much driveability or tuning potential as say a Skyline, which ofcourse also benefits from four wheel drive (albeit a better more adjustable system)
I therefore will live with it as cheap and reasonably brisk... I do however really like it, and have enjoyed playing with it and will continue to enjoy it for a long while yet....
I drove a 750 BHP Skyine (WHP)a little while ago, this had a huge amount spent on it in just the right places, mapped for ultimate driveability... Totally and utterly a daily driver.... My eyes were opened more than you could imagine, and for the cost of a billet crank, a few small bits and bobs and a remap would put out a totally reliable 900 horse... different world...
To give you guys an idea, try a timed run on your private road ofcourse from 30 to 130MPH, this unbelievably driveable ricer easily pulls 10 seconds for this increment... try it, see how much slower you actually are.... different worlds.....as I said.....
Honda CBR 1100XX Blackbird Turbo....undergoing major changes.....
S2 Coupe... bit easier off the line...
'03 ZX12-R daily hack.... lots of nice bolt ons...

The cars weight is its big draw back prob more than 200\300 kg more than a jap offering
this is why the jap stuff feels more lively IMO.Still dont have much oppertunity to use full
throttle as it is ,with over 350bhp even less so and trees look even more scary.

I understand your problem. At this moment my S2 is not even to it's 270 bhp level (I guess) but even when it was it didn't feel like that much! It is like 270 is way to low for this heavy car, especially with the typical low 3B 1,0-1,1 bar overboost in the midrange. But then you see the 2.0 liter competition (EVO/STI) their heavy too and with 270-340 bhp they do offer fantastic 0-60/0-100/60-100/etc times. So the Audi should do similar (as a 270 bhp Jap motor).

With my previous Astra C20LET I had about the same horses (but more torque) and it feels much more bzrk. I hope 360 bhp, new turbo technology, the 200 cc advantage over the C20LET and a decent map sensor will bring much more torque and will make it a much more fun to drive. And at least beat the Astra C20LET in the performance sector.

As for the Skylines: there are some Swedish and Norwegian tuners that do upgrades that brings it in the 9,50-11,00 seconds quartermiles. Which is a serious performance level that even a Skyline will need to have serious upgrades to get it done... But I think you will need 30.000+ euro's to get the job properly done...

Well the EVO's (7,8,9) and STI's after 2000 all wheigh about the same as the 3B S2 around the 1400 mark...

The thing with the 3b i found was the 5 sped gear box compared to the 6 on the jap
and the ABY, mine feels very nippy where as the 5 speeder seems quick but more stretched out if you know what i mean.quicker gear changers do make a car feel more
                              nippy\quick i think.
me and ANDYP went in an EVO6 TOMMY MAC and that had serious thrust ,we guessed
an S2 would need 380\400 to feel as rapid ,quite scary especialy on the wrong side the
                              ******* road.

Ah the Evo 6,5 TME thats my favourit EVO. The looks of the 6 combined with diffs of the 7. I thought the engine was just 280 like the normal? I guess most of them are chipped to at least 330 bhp? The older EVO's also had 5 speed boxes.

Shorter intervals between changes allways will make it feel faster than it really is, but maybe it could even be slower: gearchanges cost time. On the Astra I actually wished it was 5 speed with a long 1st, because of the traction. But motorbike style gear changes made it feel quick, you kept shifting. In the Audi you just wait and wait...

But the Audi has plenty of traction so maybe the 6 speed is an advantage. But I believe the real advantage of a 6 speed is that you can always chose the right "all in one" gear for a corner and acceleration comparison in 4th vs 4th and 5th vs 5th could favour the 6 speed amd topspeed ofcourse. I believe that for 0-250 km/h (and 250 km/h as a true top end" a 5 speed will do. But for engines running up to 8.000 rpm a shorter ratio 5 speed or standard ratio 6 speed is perhaps better?
