    360 BHP S2 3B what's it like?

It still keeps nagging in my head... What's it like to have a 360 BHP / 480+ Nm conversion with a modern ballbearing turbo on a 3B engine in a S2? Is it quick? I assume it will be at least quicker than a standard RS2 (which is a lot heavier and have a more laggy old skool turbo).

I am talking about those conversions that still run with stock pistons, conrods and compression ratio.

But is this kind of conversion worth the 4.000+ Euro price tag (for cam, turbo, exhaust manifold, injectors, fuel pump, fuel regulator, intercooler, fitting, mapping)? Together with the additional money for the conrod bearings and steel headgasket this will aproach the 5.000 Euro... So it better has to be good and reliable then!

And reliability? I've learned from a tuner that the base engineblock is so good that even after 350.000 KM's they didn't need to replace pistons... In fact they didn't even needed to hone the bores, they just put in some new piston rings for good matter and broemm they go! This is good news as my only has done 240.000 KM's and replacing pistons and so, is over budget!

However, is it needed to replace the conrods bolts for ARP's, like they were needed on my previous Opel C20LET, or are the Audi ones decent enough even for the wanted power and torque levels?

Anyone ever broken gearboxes or differentials in this level? Or any other downsides to prevent me from spending tens of thousands of Euro's when it's too late?

You had better budget for a bigger intercooler and a decent brake upgrade also.

But to answer your question, what's your car going to be like with an aditional 130-140bhp? Do you really have to ask?

Thankfully there are already AP's fitted! And ofcourse when upgrading this will include a bigger intercooler. Trouble is don't think 360 bhp is that quick. It is now with a stage 1 chip and about 270 bhp, but that isn't that quick too. I hope the main benefit is not the extra 90 bhp, but the much fast ballbearing and much bigger torque, because now only is a 200 KPA and therefore not as much overboost as the chipped ABY's, so in the new kit it should exceed well pass that. At least 140 Nm more than now?!

Regarding the power: You would expect a S2 with 360 bhp as quick as a 996 or 997 Porsche 911 GT3 (except topspeed) but somewhat I doubt it will be in this region of performance...

Stick a set of rods into the equasion so that you don't have to limit torque and you will give many a supercar a very good run for it's money.
It isn't always about the car but how good the driver is in using the available power/chassis

With 350hp and stock exhaust the S2 is comparable to the 03 ish year BMW M3's acceleration wise

I don't think in the real world they are that far off with 280 BHP 300ftlbs....

They are. A mate of mine has one of the 350bhp-odd MTM S2 conversions and it's no match for an M3 CSL, even on a straight 1/4ml.

Ive been on quite a few occasions (in my old modded VR6 and other modded vws) able to show up many a more powerful motor and they were trying too! Its all about how well you use the power and weight of vehicle (leave the power to weight ratio alone pete and you too crawford)

You mean the CSL is quicker? I thought an M3 CSL would "only" do a 13,5 1/4 mile and 60-100 mph in about 6 seconds? I assume an 360 bhp kit, would equal that?

I agree, my Astra C20LET with 276 bhp would upset the big boys and a 997 Carrera 4S could not keep up! With 4 kg per bhp and plenty of torque this comes as no suprise. But the lack of 4wd make it difficult to launch or drive in the wet. Also the head proved to be a weak point and the engine is less robust that the Audi S2 engine I guess... But the 6 speed made sure you kept shifting and there was no lack of topspeed either. But to be honest the longer first gears of the 5 speed is better to drive, but making less shifts make to seem the Audi engine not as powerfull. To get to 4 kg per bhp on the S2 I need at least 350 bhp...

I think to get that "supercar" speed you need to be looking at 400+ bhp. That's where you enter another realm.

My Coupe with 300bhp/320ftlbs was a good match for Porsche Carrera 4S's, WRX's, Evo's, older M3's. I'd hold with them all day in all ranges. It would take something special to really pull away. I'd say a GT3 fits that category, and a CSL perhaps. Encountered a few on the 'ring and they really do fly!

Not sure which turbo you're looking at, but if it's something along the lines of a 2871R then spool-up will be very fast and you'd be looking at 400bhp.

My GT3071/3B shifting @ 5,500rpm was fast, that was about 350bhp. And how i drove quickly in most situations. I would say that is a very sensible, useable level. The redline was for emergency use only and not for the faint-hearted. I think that was more like 911-turbo speed. It for sure would eat a Porsche Cayman for lunch

I wasn't talking CSL, but the bloke who was driving an 02 plate M3 on the M4 a while back seemed quite impressed when I sat up his **** all the way up to 140 clicks....

I'll try to put in another perpective for you...

I've got an estimated 400bhp under the hood of my Avant and just like with Clarkson and the Veyron, if I want to weld my pedal to the metal and have a blast at WOT, I have to ask myself the following questions :

Is the road clear ahead, void of any speed limit abiding cars within at least a 1/4mile ?
Is there a nearby junction ahead ?
Will I have to slow down before the next sharp curve ?
Have my brakes been working normally lately ?

Honest, the opportunities for me to use the full power potential of the car on street roads are quite rare and I'd be afraid to do it on roads that I'm not familiar with...

Also, with so much power on tap (and even with a stock S2 but even faster), every full acceleration WILL take you to illegal speeds. The only legal place you can have some very short fun I can think of are highway entry ramps/lanes.

So, does all this make it fast enough for you ?? :mischeif:
