yes head gasket could cause that problem by leaking into the water jacket

you could get your water system pressure tested ( some top garage should have that equipment )they should be able to tell you for sure

              slow down

dont go panicing just yet... due to cavitating and desolved gases (hopefully not combustion ) you will find gas build up at any high points like this...

              Do you water loss?

              pressurizing of the system?

              discoloured coolant?

contamination of oil in water or water in oil?

              Overheating?

Heater not blowing hot after a while?

get your car to a garage that can chemical check the coolant for combustion gases altho g12 antifreeze/coolant should change cooler if contaminated by com/ gases I believe

not a good sign if you are losing water. it probably is leaking into your water jacket thats why you are having to keep getting air out .i'd get a second opinion before you take the head off

if you have exhaust gases leaking into the water system you dont necessarily have oil mixing with water .unless you also have oil side of the gasket blown too . it just depends on where the gasket is blown from.

Sounds similar to mine Jamo, I'd lose water, air in the system and the top hoses would go really hard, eventually after a thrash the water would come out the header tank cap. head gasket was gone near the exhaust side through into the water jacket. No oil contamination.

Check there's no leaking from down below first though, bottom of the rad etc. Do you have the undertray off? Lot easier to see if you have.

Sounds exactly the same as mine, been like that from day one just thought it was an air pocket and bleed the system out. Keeps occuring now and again so it can't just be random.

Would a compression test show up anything?

I've checked for leaks none on the rad / aux rad area. Sumpe area is wetish dunno if thats from the road though.

How much am I looking at for a head gasket change if the worst comes to the worst?

Yeah, mine ran like that for about a year till it got real bad, then at Castle Combe I was doing a litre of water per lap...

Depends where you go totally and also what is done while the head is off.....it should for sure be pressure tested and machined for flatness...and block mating surface ideally as well but not practical with engine in car!!

Also, depends if the problem has done any damage such as corrosion or other damage to any engine parts or anclilleries

All being well average case scenario I would hazard a guess around ~ £500-£600 but i could be wrong!
