Update: I have again removed the IM to access the distributor cap and rotor arm. I noted the rotor arm was supplied incorrectly and as no Bosch item can be found, I have cut down the 17.9mm rotor arm to 11.8mm. Refitted everything ensuring the rear dist cap clip was fully secure this time (was so stiff it gave a false impression it was snapped down when it wasnt). All reconnected and still no start despite all injectors working and spark at the spark plugs. I have not touched any of the timing or distributor.

However I did note this time when fitting the new cap, the metal strip in the clip slot is on the opposite side to the original (see photo). I assume this is an earthing strip or ??? It's just that on the original it would sit right next to the Hall sensor connector...any idea what this strip is?

    Cheers

I vaguely remember from years ago there is a Toyota rotor arm which is exactly the same as the 3b.

Thanks Martin - I had seen that but on all searches the Toyota one come back with the wider tip at 17.9mm. All the motor factor show the same - it is very erroneous.

You can grind the wide one to the same width as the narrow.
In any case the car should start and run with the wide rotor, you're just in danger of spark hop at high RPMs.

Sorry I hadn’t seen the earlier posts..

As you say this has to be something simple, wish I could pop round and have a look, bit too far!

Thanks John, Me too - I have run out of energy and mojo so the damn thing can sit up on the lift until something turns up, Latest suggestion is to check the timing pin hasnt fallen out of the flywheel but I have no idea where that is or how to get to it and how does it work eg is it a sensor? PS I just did a search for flywheel/crank position pin and started reading all the results. All I can say is what an utter piece of rubbish design that is - I would have expected Audi to have engineered alot better idea than that. I am now trying to find what the sensors look like and where they are as someone has suggested that dust mixed with moisture from standing can affect the sensor and cleaning could solve the problem. That pin takes me right back to the cotter pins on my bicycles when I was 7 - talk about basic. Chunter over

If you remove the starter motor and rotate the engine using the crank bolt you will see the flywheel pin come around or the hole where it was. You can weld a new pin in using the same access.

Thanks Dave - appreciate the note (was having a bad day yesterday) Indeed - the more I read I saw that was something feasible (v removing the damn gearbox). I have also identified the sensor locations and will try and locate, remove and check them.

I tried to find their part nos on the usual parts site but cant see it - do you / anyone have the part numbers for the Reference & Speed sensors

Audi 90 / 80 / Coupe quattro / Cabriolet - Good-bye to hot start issue on the CQ... - ...this progressed from a long standing no start just when really hot, to no start at all, period; on an early build '90 CQ. I had no codes. Just waiting, used to work real well! When this is happening, no spark occurs (and; perhaps...
