What makes are out there and anyone got experience of them?
I know of
Carrilo - dogs danglies but too expensive for me.
Pauter - waiting on prices.
Autoverdi - Swedish - any more info?
Arrows - anymore info on them?
Eurospec - Any more info Tom?
I have been looking at rods forever it seems. I started my project over two months ago, and still have not ordered my rods. My opinon on rods thus far
1. Arrow
2. Cunningham
3. Pauter
4. Eurospec
I heard rumors that the eurospec rods are made in China, nothing wrong with that, but i still prefer the quality of an ISO managed manufacturer. Unfortunately the order above also is inline with the prices. Pauter is a good rod, and has prooved itself very well in import frag racing here in the US. If you are interested in rife drilling, then cunningham is the way to go, as they only charge 40 per rod, unlike arrow wich charges over 100 becuase they require a different forging. Cunningham also includes their own custom fasteners, and bronze bushings. Here is the response i got back from them:
"We offer two materials, 4340 chromoly and Titanium. Obviously, the Titanium is the lightest, but it is very expensive. Both type of rods will come complete with full floating bronze bushings and our own rod bolts. The bolts are made from AISI H11 tool steel and rated at 296,000 PSI. The threads on the bolts are roll formed, not cut, making them the strongest in the industry.
The Titanium rods come polished. To make a set for your engine will cost as follows:
Titanium--- $450 each rod
4340 chromoly rods-- $180 each rod
OPTION
Since you will be running at hi revs, and a turbo or other boost for power, we strongly recommend the rifle drilling. This will save the internal parts from early fatigue, and possibly failure. The engine will run cooler, and the pins and bottom of the pistons will be reduced from the heat build-up. The cost for this process is:
Titanium-- $80 extra for each rod
4340 Chromoly-- $40 extra each rod
As for making them lighter, we have a patented process that lightens the rods. We do this in the manufacturing process. We do NOT cut off materila like our competitors. Our patented process keeps the rods like original, strong, and dependable. Cutting off material weakens the rods. Our process is the only way to guarantee the strength! This lightweight process will cost an extra $25 per rod. We cannot give you an exact weight reduction until we make the first rod as it all depends on the physical size. The weight reduction can be from 35 to75 grams."

Another interesting design feature of the cunningham rods was:
"Our exclusive process creates a memory action that keeps the caps round even during extreme high revs. When our rods are made, they have grain patterns, just like wood. We make the body/neck of the rods with the vertical grain direction, while the caps are made in the horizontal direction."
They have a very nice product for the money, in my opinion better than pauter, and actualy cheaper.

Things have changed for me now and I am trying to decide which way to go with rod selection, something that I thought I would not have to do for a while.
I was on the Eurospec site last night but couldnt find any more info about their rods, those Cunningham rods sound very interesting.
About rifle drilling, does anyone know if this is so important when using pistons like JE that have forced pin oiling built into them?
I was going to say- to keep the bottom of the piston cool - we have oil sprayers - I'm sure guys on the Kreummer list aren't haveing problems without the drilling - well - one guy did - which means I have a nagging dout about no rifle drilling.
Those Europec ones do not say whther they are for turbo or NA engines - that would make a huge difference sinc eth eturbo ones are running huge amounts more torque.
Cheers for the cunningham info. $180 each - £476 plus shipping plus taxes - i had a number to call to ask customs what commoddity code these would be and thus how much on custom tax we would pay and on how much customs handling charges - I'll need to look out that as it can add upto a lot.
Mark - I found that arrow site earlier - I have emailed for a quote on off-the-shelf rods they have for our cars.
Are you looking to get rods soon - as it could be worthwhile for you, me and Tom to get 3 sets of whichever - iI need rods capable of 550bhp and 700Nm - What are your requirements?
much the same I suppose, but I dont want them to be on the limit at those figures.
Thats what I like about the 1000bhp (I think) rating that Carrillos have, unfortunately they cost around that amount in £'s too .
Reply from Arrow re. rods - these are too dear for me - I have a pdf if anyone is interested in more info.

Sorry Hans - I never noticed you said that - I have emailed them but had no reply today. if you can get any more info that would be helpful - I think Tom is struggling to get in touch with Eurospec.
How soon are you looking to buy? If I could get in touch with someone I am looking for a set of eurospec, pauter or cunningham to be delivered within the next 3 weeks - I think that is the time it takes for the pistons when I decide to go for them.
Three weeks will be tough. Here in the US the racing prep season has started, and all the shops are booked. I bet that there is at least a 6 week wait on any non stocked rods in the US. I am still debating whether or not to use arrow or cunningham. The cunningham appeal to my wallet, as they are several hundred less than the arrows with rife drilling.
