    Carbon canister valve

Changed the after run pump on my 94 ABY avant last night. While I was waiting for the car to warm up after fitting the pump, I decided to have a listen around the engine bay. For quite some time I have had an annoying ticking coming from the engine and have always put it down to the injectors.
However, it would appear that this is not the case. I eventually tracked it down to the carbon canister valve. The ticking is so loud that I can hear it in the car while it is idling. Would someone tell me is this normal? Is it a fault with the valve and does it need to be replaced? Is there a method for checking it? And lastly, if it should be replaced, roughly how much is the part?

    Thanks in advance

Alistair, also check the bomb. Mine ticks when on tickover or when driving along. if you hold onto the copper pipe you can feel it pulsing

It ticks when idling to apply inlet manifold vacuum to the canister. Sounds loud though, is it resting aganst something hard?

If it leaks you'll get a boost leak into the PCV system. You could take it off and try to blow through it or test it with a mightyvac?.
