The car has lost its Mojo!

So I woke up to find we had fantastic weather outside, nice and cold with a hint of fog so I knew that the air was lovely and dense...perfect for driving an S2!

Unfortunately, after I warmed the car up, I attempted to stretch the S2s legs abit only to find that nothing happened! Normally I stick my foot down and wait for the a huge surge of torque to drag me down the road at an alarming rate but it just wasn't there today.

I could hear the turbo spooling up so I knew that the turbo was atleast functioning, but there was just a serious lack of power. There were no cut outs, no jerky acceleration, just that the car was completely holding back...

    Does anybody have any ideas?

The annoying thing is that I took it out for a blast on saturday evening and it was feeling on top form. Has anybody got some ideas for me?

Change of fuel? I have had this occasionally, but I think it was more mental than anything, possibly combined with a poor batch of BP Super which my car does not rate.

Other than that I am not sure. Pull the codes?

Have you touched anything since Sat night?

    Good luck Rob.

    Cheers,

    Steve.

It was definatly holding back as I looked behind and the car following was still pretty close which was disturbing.

It may be a dodgy batch of fuel, I am hoping thats what it is to be honest.

I haven't touched anything since saturday night so I can't see that I have done anything to cause it.

I shall be running it out at about again in about 2 hours so I will report back then.

Gutted to hear this Rob - have you got a boost leak perhaps? Any suspicious air-leaking type noises?

Well I re-fitted the old air filter a couple of weeks back whilst I source all the air guides for the RS2 box, so everything is much more audible again. If anything the car was quieter this morning and didn't sound as though it was hitting full boost.

So I don't think I have a boost leak but I shall have a good look around when I get the chance to.

Maybe the WGFV is not working so you're only getting limp home boost. Start the engine and let it idle, blip the throttle very fast and hard, you should hear the valve click, if you can get your finger on it you should feel the click. No need to rev it up like mad just blip the throttle.

That would make sense, I shall have a look at that, thanks John.

I did change the WGFV at the last MRC meet so it wasn't that long ago really, I will be slightly miffed if it has stopped working that quickly.

If you changed it fairly recently, it is possible that the plug was not pushed absolutely home, and after some time it has simply come far enough unplugged to not make the connection, and is therefore not working....
Does sound like WGFV to be honest....
                good luck.

Thats also possible, I did it at the beginning of the year so may have taken abit of time to work itself loose.

                  I shall check it out.

Just another thought - did the respray go into the engine compartnment? If so could be they dislodged something?

No they didn't spray the engine compartment but the bonnet did come off. They also disconnected the battery so maybe that could be loose and causing issues. (although I vaguely remember seeing a good charge to the battery on the way to work).

What sort of boost levels are you getting?
If the WGFV is dead or unplugged it will just boost to mechanical boost - .4bar.

Could also be a few other things though, Like faulty knock sensors.

                        Good luck.

I don't have a boost gauge fitted so its hard to tell. I do know that the cars maximum acceleration is achieved at about 1/2 throttle now, pressing the pedal down any further results in more noise but thats all.

I took it out for a run to a clients and on the way back I booted it around a roundabout in 2nd gear and all was well but that was all I got for 40 minutes of driving. Every other time I tried it just wouldn't have it.

My idle has creeped up to roughly 1000rpm and it was missing ever so slightly. Perhaps a fuelling issue?

Are you sure it is not running on 4 cylinders? My S2 felt like that when I had a misfire. Is the Idle lumpy or smooth? You can easily hear a misfire at idle. If not wind the windows down when booting it and listen. Sounds like it could be an intermitent mis fire to me?

I can hear it missing slightly at idle but it doesn't feel like its missing when under load as there is no stuttering, just completely holding back. I shall check the leads once the car has completely cooled down.

I really appreciate all the comments guys, thank you.
