Hey Andy,
Sorry to hear you're having problems - disheartening I know!
Just as a thought, are you sure the spares you have tried are all 100% - amybe the MAF you tried is also faulty?
Maybe clutching at straws, but trying to help.

Would,by any chance, the ECU retard the ignition timing/cut the fuel (when under load) due to knock sensor/s needing re-adjustment.Dont know why I say this if all was OK before, but just a thought.
OK,I know sod all about S2,but this was the case on a car I once owned with a similar engine management set-up.
Good Luck Andy

ok im not trying to annoy you but when you say it was ok for a bit was this after you took the wedge of the butterfly to allow more air to get in .. i was wonderiing if this wedge removed ment that all the cylinders dont get the air correctly to them causing a valve or something to burn out.. or on low throttle positons the air dosent get distributed evenly to each cylinder,, causing poor running,, i ask this because i was tempted to take the wedge of but thought it must do something to the air as it goes down the inlet like forcing it over the top to get an even sucking in, in each cylinder.. i hope you get this sorted its pants when they dont run right but gee it does make them seem fast once they work correctly...
Couldn't get on it last night but going to give it a once-over tonight if I can. Dodgy connection somewhere is almost certainly what's up.
Having pressure tested it I'd know if it was a split pipe or dodgy joint so I can rule that out.
Going to check the continuity on the coil pack earth as the wiring here is a little tired and so might have split after being disturbed.
Also going to check the ECU and fuse / relay boxes.
The fact that it was running means that it's just going to be one thing (for now).
I agree about it not being the TB.
Have reset the ECU so will see what happens this evening.
...the fun continues...
On a more entertaining note, my Milltek DP turned up yesterday! :mischeif:
Andy - I think you could be on the right track with that idea as you would have had to remove and lift away the coil packs to get the head off... Could well be that some crusty old wiring in there has let you down - or you were really unlucky and snagged some of it when refitting the cam cover with coilpacks.
I had a similar problem almost exactly as you describe. It was on a Dialynx short quattro. Tried absolutely everything. Turned out it was sediment in the fuel tank due to the car standing for so long that blocked the fuel filter. Would start perfectly touch the accelerator... dead....
hmmm sorry to see you're having a nightmare on this. I'd also say MAF as i know when i didnt plug mine back in it would idle but when i tried to drive away it was terrible and killed the engine.
Good luck getting it sorted....you WILL break 300bhp
Maf is def top of the list... try borrowing a know good one and don't rely on a 'spare', you need one off a running car! I have swopped what I thought was a 'good' spare in the past and got caught out
Do you run a aftermarket air filter and is it a oiled type?? They kill maf's
Check the pins in the maf connector are clean and in place as well.
