I am no expert at all regarding what an EGT should be but I am really staggered by what I've read here

750 degrees celsius just when cruising !!! and only 100 degrees more at WOT. Incredible ! I never would have expected such high figures !

I honestly thought it was closer to 300 degrees when cruising and 5-600 at the Nurburgring....

No wonder the exhaust manifolds crack after a while...
Also, how can the oil not reach it's flash point when fed into the turbo ?

        Awesome, man... awesome !

Mines was after the turbo aswell on downpipe , didnt exceed more than 800 degrees on hard acceleration.

midnight,it depends on where the EGT sensor is placed.
Most tuners,as well as minhea(from older posts i found) say that the EGTs should not exceed 950C if the sensor is placed at the beginning of the turbo, meaning the turbo hotside on all occasions.Garrett also reccommends that the egts dont go over 1000C for long periods of time.
All these temperatures reflect on the temperatures in the pistons area as well.

300C i get only if im going down a hill and i have either neutral,or i just dont press the gas at all.

500-600 degrees i get during small driving in the city

i have 700-750c at cruising with 14.7afr and at wot, not higher too much because the mixture
              is 11afr at that time.

Just bringing up an old thread here.

My EGT probe is located in the downpipe 50-70mm from the turbo flange.

If I'm cruising with 130-140 km/h in 6 gear at around 3000 RPM i see close to 600 degress celciuis perhaps a little higher. This is with lambda 1.00 so I could try and lean it out a bit and run 1.05 or is 600 to high on cruise?

When I was using motronic I believe I was reading around 550-580 degress celcius but this was with out a cat, currently running a 100 cell cat.

well if your EGT sensor is on that place, i would assume at least 100-120C higher on the turbo or EM, therefore you are ok to lean it out a bit more. If your timing is not very aggressive for cruise you may increase that as well and you'll see the EGTs lowering. If you lean it out first and EGTs dont really change much, you'll find that you are ok. If they come up, then you are probably reaching the limit of your timing for that mixture(ie 1.05). Therefore, either go back to 1.00 and increase the timing, see what happens, OR go to 1.05 and decrease the timing a bit.

I found that with the 0.82AR and the EGT on the EM, i get on the same areas about 700-750C now, whereas before i was easily reaching the 800+ mark. However after asking around, even being on the 800 mark is not that bad for cruise. Now on 120km/h im about 650-700 most of the times, but i think i have found a good timing for cruise and it has started to give me some good numbers on fuel economy as well!

My EGT-probe is placed just before the turbo on the exhaust manifold. http://koti.mbnet.fi/pro-ht/Audi_URS...and-egt-06.jpg Should I switch it to the DP close to the turbo outlet? What do you think?

With mine fitted on the turbo hotside yesterday on a small trip i had the following indications.
                      6th gear at 130-140Kms(85ml)

1)on level plane and cruise control on(meaning part throttle as less possible to achieve better fuel consumption),being on the middle of the vaccum area of the boost gauge----->700-750C

2)same conditions only this time slight uphill nothing serious, boost gauge showing 0bar of boost now------>800-850C

Overall on the highway the temps where from 700-820C while on cruise control which i wondered if they are ok as Erdal had noticed that the best cruising temp for me would be around 700-750C so not to be lean.

                      any thoughts?
                      cheers

I still have more work to do on my map, but on cruise I would only see 600 to 650c the EGT probe is placed on my 4 bolt to V band adapter for exhaust

its just fine there. Ideal id say. Some people are afraid that it can melt and drop into the turbo if it is placed before the turbo, but i have never seen it happen, so.

better there than the downpipe, as you would be always guessing the ideal EGT

so basically after the turbo.Because it is so close to it though i wouldnt add 100-150C to that figure, i would only add 50-70 overall, as i have seen that the hotter the temps, the smaller the difference. That was when i had 2 EGT sensors, one on the turbo and the other about 40cm away from it on the downpipe. On WOTs and high temps, the difference between them was close to 30-40C, but on cold temps, ie below 650, the difference was up to 180C

So just to be clear if egt sensor is located just after turbo we should subtract 50-100 degress celcius and if we assume 100 degree loss then 600-650 degress on cruise is ok?

Just to be clear my sensor is located 5-7 cm after turbo so that can not be much more then 100 degree loss if just after turbo is 50-70 degree loss?

its a rough figure. Id say the closer to the turbo, the less you have to ADD to what your sensor reads:

                              eg:
                              1) sensor at flange between downpipe and turbo: reads 600--> is about 650-680 @ EM or on the turbo hotside
                              2) Sensor about 10cm away from the downpipe: 600---> 700-720C @ EM
                              3) Sensor further away: 600--->750-780

the highest the EGT the smaller the difference, ie on example 1: if you see 850--> it might be 890 and so forth...

Had to check the cruising egt-temps, and when driving between 80-100km/h they look like 540-580C. And the probe is located before the turbo, in the ext-manifold.
