    !! Super 7a Cam Swap !!

    FYI:

I have Pauls HomeFry and a Dahlback intake in my (ABY) S2, the rest of the engine is essentially stock, I also own a (7A) 90 20V Quattro.

Last week I straight swapped the (7A) exhaust cam from the 90, into the S2..AND,
vice-versa, swapped the (ABY) exhaust cam, into the 90.

My Audi Factory Trained mechanic seriously questioned my logic several times before performing the somewhat lengthy operation !!

But after the successful transplants and a good half hour of test driving in both cars, one thing was IMMEDIATELY apparent, and it was ALL GOOD

The 90 which has never had much torque low down and thus required a great deal of revs to keep in the power band, was instantly more responsive throughout all gears and ultimately MUCH smoother to drive.

The S2 which thanks to the turbo had plenty of low down torque, but ran out of puff up top, now still had low down pick up, BUT, instead of peaking at ~4000-5400 with mad torque (thanks to the homefry !), it now does not stop pulling like a beast until redline cut out

There is one aspect to account, the boost now appears to come on just a TAD later but it is LINEAR and smooth all the way to the top, whereas before it really peaked and thus resulted in my girlfriend referring to the S2 as SKITZO the Scalded Cat

This swap has transformed both cars and made them far more "driveable" much to the amazement of my mechanic who just kept scratching his head and smiling !

The next step for me is to try a 0.2 greater spring tension in the WG and also an adjustable cam pulley to add a couple of degrees advance in order to further retain the stock turbo characteristic of earlier spool and torque, AND all the above goodness
Although ultimately I'm going to do it "properly" and go GT3071 with remap etc, etc...

Makes sense. Glad you're happy with the results.

Thanks, you've just given me the incentive to change the 7A ex cam back to stock 3B, I love that SKITZO the scalded cat scenario

wasnt it necessary to have a remap if you isntalled the 7A exhaust cam?

ABY cam in a 7A is an interesting idea, how does it compare top end?

Might give that a go at the weekend :mischeif:

The Aby Ex. cam in the 90 has certainly had a mild reduction up top as far as the powerband , but what I was really looking for with this swap was more linear response, you simply don't need to rev the crap out of the engine in order to get as much forward progress (as much fun as it is to throttle any of the 20V engines ).
Therefore you can change up gears earlier due to the presence of more low end torque, and for the bulk of city driving thats what really matters.
Besides I just jump into the S2 when I "feel the urge to splurge"

Don't get me wrong as far as "scalding the cat" goes either, my mechanic noted that there was actually more torque all the way through, boost just comes on a moment later, and that is an easy couple of turns on the WG or a marginally stiffer spring.
Seriously this is the best of both worlds and I'm sure a remap could extract yet more, but I'll wait till the big blower steps in, for now I'm more than happy with the results of a few hours work !

i read somewhere that the remap is not only to be able to extract more, but also to avoid middle range lean mixture, potentially dangerous for the engine.

                maps

I don't suppose you did a RR session before and after as this would have filled a gap in information that is presently missing for this mod. And as mentioned I was told you needed a re-map to fit the 7A ex cam to keep the AFR correct.

Good stuff, I had always suspected this approach to be OK as the higher lift camshaft must be flowing more air through the system but I'd like to see wideband AFR on the homefried S2 with that 7A EX cam just to be sure.

If its in the region of 10-12 at WOT on decent pump gas then you are good to go. I have a 7A EX cam myself on the bench... When time permits I'll have a serious look at a tweak on the chips to cater for it. COuld be a while though - got enough half-finished projects in the works for now.

Any news Paul? Running the 7A exhaust already? I am thinking of swapping my ADU cams for a ABY inlet and 7A outlet soon.

The RS2 inlet and ABY inlet are the same part number so no need to swap them.

I wouldn't swap from ADU cams to 7A, you will feel the torque loss.

I'm not sold on the 7A exhaust cam upgrade after speaking to members to have done it and don't like the loss of grunt.

I've got a A inlet cam to try, just to be different, might be a sack of crap, might actuall work, who knows Tempted to go for an adjustablecam gear to try and advance the 7A inlet a little to more like the NM inlet.
