Just a thought,,but why is there no washer with the crankbolt.I tend to agee with the idea that you can damage the key when tightening the crank bolt.

The S4, RS4, V6 engines plus the TDi engines do not have woodruff keys on the camshaft sprokets.
Allows you to get the cam timing spot on when tensioning the belt.

There is a durty big washer in there - if there isn't you should be worried.

Well... the washer is intergated with the screw (large screw head) ..... or I missed something....
But I have two engines in stock and they both have no seperate washers.

Just to clarify... Yes the big bottom bolt has integral washer face, but there is also a large washer that is placed over the crankshaft toothed belt pulley.

yup - neither of my 7As had that washer - perhaps that was introduced on the later models to stop the torquing damaging the key

For the record, my AAH engine died due to slipped timing because of a damaged key, unless it looks absolutely perfect id always replace the sprocket now - its only £20 IIRC

Suspect you might be right there Mark - good point.

Family album states that as ABY only within ACOQ, but another version is on the NG.
And of course its there on ADU for RS2.

And its called up on AAN also.

So OK - I stand corrected - that big separate washer doesn't apply to 3B.

I have an exaudi workshop manual that covers the AAN and ABY 5 cyl FI 4valve turbo
and another for the 3b both show diagrams of the bolt and damper assemble with no washer. But you have me worried now Paul, as I feel there should be

The diagrams don't show it - but there is some small print and references to the washer on AAN/ABY/ADU - I have the manuals also. They refer to that washer as 'diamond coated' which I think is hilarious, but it must be true when you see the price Audi wants for that part !

With respect to this - http://s2central.net/Timing_Belt_Renewal_Rev1.pdf - see Figure 13 with that washer resting inside new crankshaft toothed pulley.

                                @volcanoRS :

this is the damper lower pulley, I was talking about the camshaft pulley.
I've heard that this one breakes sometimes too...
