yes the hall sensor is in the dizzy, changing the belt is a good idea presuming you dont know when it was last done.Change the water pump as well.If you have the right gear for the job the crank bolt is easy.

Great if you could get me that mate, i'll have a go at making one rather than buying one as knowing audi prices it will be stupidly expensive

Have had another go tonight at trying to get this thing running and having no luck so far
Tried another dizzy on it and am still getting no spark, am also getting the same fault code coming up saying 00512 Camshaft posititon (HALL) sensor not at reference mark.
I marked the old dizzy before i removed it and marked the replacement one in the same position before i fitted it so am quite sure its in in the right position, is there a slim chance its not timed up 100% correctly or do i need to be looking for something else !!!
Going to take the covers of tomorrow night and check the cam sprocket and timing is all in order, do i need to remove the aux rad to get access for all this or can it be done with the rad left in place ?? Looks tight !!!!Comment

.
If you get a fault code it means that there was a problem with the sensor/connector/wiring all the way back to the ecu.
You need to chek all parts back to the ecu...carefully.Carlos.

If i need to be checking the wiring from the ecu where can i get a wiring diagram so i know what pin numbers on the ecu multi plug to check ??? And where is the ecu hidden on these things ????
Is there any particular place where wiring gets damaged, am just thinking along the lines of the older mondeo's that chaffed through wiring on the support bracket on the gearbox causing problems with the immobilisers !Comment

i have a similiar thread here:
S2Central.net posted a link to the ecu schematics including the fuel pump relay, which is linked with spark. Might be useful.
I know i said this before, but did you check to make sure the dizzy wasn't 180degs out? This would cause the sypmtoms you are describing!Comment

you can check the cam pulley position with the aux rad still fitted. You need to unbolt the front transom and loosen the nuts holding the aux rad so that the rad can be moved without disturbing the water hoses.
Turn the crank by hand until the flywheel mark lines up. Remove the front timing belt cover and check the cam pulley is in position. lastly verify the distributor rotor arm is as expected.
No point trying another distributor if the timing marks haven't been verified.Mike
