    Rod Weight

Chaps, how does the weight of Scat rods compare to standard ABY rods and also to more expensive rods like Arrow etc?

    Some ramblings:-

I'm looking at rebuilding the bottom end on mine with lightened 7A flywheel (7 to 8kg) and possibly a lighter front pulley, either 3B (minimal weight change) or custom steel (preferred option but I'll need advice on that from BDB after a reading recent thread by Tonks4x4).

I'm considering leaving the standard rods in there as they'll take my k24 setup without problems so there's no worries there and that'll save me £250 min. Also, should I ever go mad on power then I'd need to get a new clutch and would possibly go Fidanza flywheel so would need to have it balanced all over again anyway and could replace the rods then. Would prefer to spend the money elsewhere for now, possibly on having the crank lightened a bit (I know that's a bit funny on a steel flywheel but it all helps) and so was wondering if there were any other advantages with rods such as light weight over standard... unfortunatley Titanium rods are out of the question

Another option is to go to 82mm pistons on a slight overbore and thus getting a little more capacity although I'm under the impression this would cost more than the rods so might be better to just leave it... block has done 165k though so should need honing at least.

Come on you lot, there are enough sets of Scat rods out there for someone to post up the weight at least

If your pulling the bottom end apart it would be silly not to IMO. It may save you £250 now but it will cost you that in bearings/gaskets/and time to fit them in the future. Suppose you pick up an RS2 turbo a few months from now, you will be kicking yourself for not fitting them

          DO NOT save yourself £250!

..and this was with K24 with a 34mm restrictor.

Aren't the weights on the outside of the box?
I haven't got any left BTW.

                .

I'll weigh one tomorrow on a proper balance, only gives end weights on the box.

Pembo, was that not the 3B though? ABY rods are ok for 400ftlbs. If i go for a bigger turbo then I need to do some re-balancing for a new clutch anyway so not too worried.

3B rods are stonger than ABY

As confirmed by Mihnea at MRC, it's on a thread on the forum.

Just read on Ebay that the H section rods on there with ARP bolts are 570g each.

Hmmm, not too sure what to do now. Suppose I'll just have to go without food and save for some Scats (better not tell too many people that!)... at least I'll fit the Recaro better

Hmmm, it looks like once again the forum is going to encourage me to do things properly and spend lots on the old girl

Cheers for the weights. Just need to compare it to a stanadard one now.
