i don't get the idea of audi not running a DV back then? You hear people say it alot but is that really true??
The road cars all had one and the turbo stalling could only have added to the lag that the s1 suffered.
I have always wondered if it had a DV that let pressure off in stages rather than one big whooosh to save some manifold pressure between short gearchanges. Hence the staged chatter.
Top secret DV. Just a thought or delusional inquisition

Not true, the WR quattros never had a DV, mine's been running without one since 1984 . I don't think the MBs did either, is it because the K-Jetronic mechanical fuel injection doesn't like them. The 3B engined RR with Motronic was the first to have one I think.Comment

spot on!
Funny I never had stall with the wr bobbins engine.
Newsh does yours do it?Rob..

I don't believe that turbo stall will make a huge impact on turbo life TBH, but i suppose it depends what use your car gets and how much boost you're running. Lots of cars don't have a DV as standard fitment and still have good reliability.Panthero Coupé quattro 20vt

Yeah it does a chirpy thing which is really quite nice, only running 1 bar of boost so not as though I'm going to snap a blade or bend the throttle butterfly though eh? I tried to fit a spare Forge valve I have to it a few months ago to see if it would keep the turbo spooled up better, it should do, trouble is on tickover it would pull the valve open so the air flap would close and shut off the fuel and stall the motor, right pain in the bum. So its either got to be a true Diverter Valve which means more complicated plumbing, or a twin piston thing I think. There's a roumour you can use a bleed valve in the line to the manifold but I've not tried that.Comment

It never been proven that compressor surge off throttle kills turbos. On throttle it will. So when these fast spooling turbos get going and the engine cant consume that much air it bounces back in the same way.
I wont be using a dump valve on my engine when its built. Then perhaps you guys can have some answers!Comment

Surge will kill your compressorwheel.
It stresses the vanes in a way that they aren't designed for.
On the long term fatique will kill the blades.
You can doubt about my knowledge, I have my connections with MHI, the Dutch company that supplies Europe of Mitsubishi turbo's. I've seen durabilitytests on turbochargers that simulate loadcycles on compressors and they will fail, although it may take a while.Comment
