have you checked all the timming etc?
could be fuel pump on the way out? usually these just die tho,
see if you can get another car to try bits off like maf, oxy senser, etc one at a time

timing and fuel pump are all ok, i was reading through the history lastnight and it was booked in for poor performance at high revs 3 years ago and had the lamba sensor replaced in the last 3 years it's only done 3000 miles, i wondered if lack of use to be part of the problem.Comment

hiya,
i've got an update of my s2, i fitted the coil pack but it's made no difference so i've got an maf coming tomorrow i checked the one that was on it and it seems ok when it's diconnected it runs even worse so i don't if the maf is faulty, while i was with the car i thought i would investigate the misfire further. Whats happening is when it gets to 3500 revs it misses if you keep your foot pressed down it will continue to miss untill you slow down and stall you also get a load of black smoke coming out of the exhaust, what also happened tonight while testing it was the overheating sign came on the dash the fan cuts in but it seems to cut in every 2 minutes and runs for 30 secs then stops and starts again 2 mins later, i checked the header tank and there was no excess pressure in it and all the coolant pipes are warm. anyone got any ideas because i am going mental trying to sort it.Comment

you need to check it with vagcom and ensure there are no air leaks, you will be going round in circles wasting money on unnecessaries otherwise...Comment

Where are you based? A good number of us have vagcom and could easily check the ECU for stored fault codes that may help in pinpointing the problem.

Start with the easy/cheap stuff. Forget Vag-Com it's a waste of £££, get yourself a 12V LED and follow the intructions on s2central:
Introduction
Where to connect
How to connect
What the codes mean...
When you've done that it's probably worth doing a pressure test on all the boost hoses.SSComment
