    New turbo won't fit!!!!! HELP

Ive spent the past 2 weekends trying to fit my new turbo. I expected it to be a swap job, as ive had the old one off a few times before.
Though it just wont line up with the bottom oil and water hoses, its just 10mm to far away. and the hoses wont make the correct angles to go on, what could it possibly be ive tried everything, the old hoses, new hoses. This is really getting on my nerves and I'm about ready to bin the whole thing.
Everything is done up correctly and fitting it to the exhaust manifold and the downpipe wasnt a problem.
And it is the correct turbo, a rebuilt unit from AET.
Any suggestions would be great as i really need the car for work.
Why is nothing ever simple on these cars?

Are you able to compare it to your original turbo or did this go to AET in exchange?

Does the exhaust housing need rotating to be in the correct orientation?

Rotate the compressor housing and the oil return should line up

Rotated it, everything fine, running now, wired problems though with my water temp sensor. It works but only when at rest, it comes up to temp, fan kicks in alright, but as soon as i drive off it show no temp???? This is causing the car to have piss poor mpg becuase i think its in cold start when driving normally.
Once again thanks and any ideas, just a new mfts need?

Sounds like your thermostat is stuck open.

For MFTS info go here and click on the G62/MFTS link under the engine bay map:

              http://forums.audiworld.com/s4s6/msgs/222453.phtml

You can confirm whether you have a MFTS issue by checking the MFTS against the climate control (CC) temp (with the heater on). If the CC temp is normal (89 C) and the analogue coolant temp gauge reads low, the MFTS is b*ggered. If, on the other hand, the CC reads low and the temp gauge reads low, your thermostat is stuck open. In this condition, sitting at idle or travelling slowly, the temp will rise, however, at speed the temp will drop (due to more airflow through the rad and no flow control between the engine and the rad).

Here is a link on how to read CC coolant temp (on Ch 51) (assuming you have automatic climate control).

im pretty sure its not the thermostat, its not when i get moving after a short whil it's literally as i put it in gear and start to crawl off. By the time if got out the garage on to the drive its droped to nothing.
so I'm thinking this is a MFTS issue, or something funny with the ecu, but does the sensor get its reading from the ecu? or is it seperate, i know on a 3b the ecu gets it's reading from the mfts which could explain my bad economy and so on.

Could be a bad earth or as you say the MFTS.

There's another sensor on the back of the head.

@Urs4boy - you make a lot of assumptions - not good engineering practice dontchya know - LOL.

The S2 is not exactly the same as a UrS4... One needs to know, or ask, where the differences are - not assume them...

#1 None of the UK S2/RS2 have the automatic climate control fitted at the factory.

There is danger of some confusion in this thread which I wanna clarify.

G62 is the coolant temp sensor (CTS) at back of cylinder head for the ECU to read water temperature

The MFTS is F76 and it lives in the water rail under the IM.

More info below... The 'T' pin is the one that drives the water temp gauge.

You'll need to hit the wiring diagrams to isolate any potential fault between the MFTS and the cluster.

However in this case, where you are experiencing bad fuel consumption and a low temp reading on the cluster it smells like the thermostat might indeed be stuck open. ALthough its worth testing the MFTS, cluster and G62 as a failure of F76 and G62 at the same time would give similar results - fundamentally this is less likely.

The thermostat isn't too horrendous a job, but you'll be removing the aux radiator and the hydraulic pump for access to it - worth doing the two orrible water link pipes in that area whilst you are at it.

                          I know nothing but,

assuming, (dangerous I know), that you've only changed the turbo and the car was behaving on the temperature front beforehand, is it as daft as the plug has not been refitted to the water temp sender at the rear of the engine?

Probably not, but worth suggesting anyway as it is so easy to check.

Avoid using it if it's running cold / mad rich as it will bore wash the bores, not ideal.

Let us all know what it turns out to be, assuming you don't top your self first?

I know it's the pits when you need it for work and you've no access to a "spare" car.

Changing the shocks on my Avant this weekend to four new Konis. Front was easy as stripped recently to do the bushes, so copper grease paying off. Rear never touched and never any copper greased, so all tight and / or seized.

Turbo side top wishbone and strut housing soaking overnight in used engine oil to see if it will feel up.

Want to use it on Tuesday for work, but may have to borrow my brothers ACE Avant.

                          Good luck with yours.

                          Kind regards.

Hmm thinking about it I have been fidiling behind the head, fitting the new pcv parts, so mayb ive just nudged the connector there. I am suspecting a bad earth to be honest, as the tachometer plays up sometimes, and its not peeling paint as ive had the dash out a couple of months ago to check for that.
I will let everyone know what it is when i find it, first step i think will be to vag com it, and do a drive on a known amount of fuel to see what the actual consumption is. I will get a new mfts and G62. Then see how it goes from there.
Thanks for the advice, time to find my new multimeter.
