The correct Distributor Rotor for the 3B 20V Turbo Engine
The correct Distributor Rotor for the 3B 20V Turbo Engine
The Bosch catalog shows the INCORRECT distributor rotor for this 20V Turbo application. This Bosch 04170 (1 234 332 350 R1) rotor has a wider electrode tip measuring 0.710 inches (~17-18mm). The Audi part number shown for this INCORRECT rotor is 052 905 225C but you can use the Toyota distributor rotor==>19102-02020 price 20€
Bosch==>1-234-332-414 same price
I'm confused here, the 3B should have a wide tipped rotor as the tip has to pass spark at all stages of advance retard. Are you saying it should have a wide tipped rotor or not?
It is common to find the wrong narrow tipped rotors from NA cars in turbo quattros and they run like crap. Also its worth checking your rotor tip to make sure that the burn mark from the spark is not running off the end of the rotor tip at full adv or ret. If it is then the dist is in the wrong positon or the rotor is the wrong one.
Condition of the rotor and cap on the 3B is crucial to reliability of these motors, along with the dist drive gear.
Also, I'm told, you should never steam wash a 3B engine and run it down the road to dry it, water in the distributor can make it fire on the wrong cyl and if this happens under boost you can throw a rod through the block.
Apparently the 3B should have the narrow tipped rotor, think its something like 12mm,
my local bosch dealer could get one but was about £15, didnt actually see it either to see if it was the same.
vagparts said one from a polo, part number 052 905 225C is the same, but has a wide tip also. Using it in the 100, works fine.
Strange, that's certainly not true for the URs, anyway I guess the point is, as long as you have clean brass each side of the area where the spark jumps across then it's wide enough and you're ok.
