Looks like basically sound advice here but let me add some thoughts and experiences -
1. Homefry is best 'bang for buck' upgrade on ABY
2. Modified airbox (or RS2 affair) definitely makes a difference. I measured some gains with the lower airbox portion fitted with my G-Tech gizmo... I later fitted the upper portion and all the proper plastics behind the headlight and it feels like I've strangled it a little bit. Could be placebo effect, but there is such a small physical channel for air at the front to squeeze past the headlight and into the airbox - I'm definitely going to look at some ducting at the front or slots in the wing.
3. The RS2 intercooler or bigger (eg Carsten) DOES create cooler air... The only issue with that is the ABY chipset counterbalances boost levels so that you don't get the full benefit of lower air temps - sure you get improved knock resilience as air is actually colder, but until I can unlock the temp compensation map in the ABY boost chip then that's life for now... The RS2 chipset is different in this regard and I will crack it one day.
4. Wagner or Carsten reverse inlet makes good sense whatever turbo you have - just less plumbing and pipework volume between turbo and throttle body - reduced lag, improved throttle response
5. Agree that RS2 or bigger EM is really only worthwhile on RS2 or bigger turbo where you are limited by the EM
6. Sports CATs and freeflowing exhausts always help with performance on a turbo car
7. SM flywheel reduces rotational mass and gives a much revvvier character - engine accelerates faster
8. Camshafts are a trickier one - higher lift of the 7A or RS2 or NM exhaust cam is hard to argue with - but needs adjustable cam pulley to get best benefit - with lots of time required and ideally some tweaked fuel & timing maps to extract the most from them.Paul Nugent

Is the 3b fly wheel a bolt on fix ?ABY is fitted with the dual mass flywheel as standard and it dulls everything down and is heavier, 3B was a good mod on mine.
Don't bother with the RS2 airbox, just cut the front off the OE box, free mod and it works.
OE DP is 2.5", Milltek cat-back is 2.75", best bet is to get a 3" DP and sports cat and have it grafted onto the Milltek, should be <£500 for 034/Supersprint/Custom
Sounds like a plan ..

Sure its mostly bolt-on, but there are complications you need to be aware of... See a thread from Andy when he did this and cracked his bellend !Paul Nugent

All most excllent info ...
Really looks like I chop the ABY air box about a bit ... maybe add sme ducting for a bit of ram air.
RS2 Turbo as is an instant fix
a trip MRC so get all sorted once all kit is on?
Does anyoen have an RS2 turbo for sale or know how much I should expect to pay for one
looking at these, the guy reckions they "this is genuine Borg Warner (KKK) Turbocharger for RS2." ??? is this Audi OEM

Yep that's an RS2 turbo, and not a bad price. As a rule a second hand unit will cost you about £350/400, to recon it you need to factor in about £300+.1990 B3 2.0 80 quattro.

@Bug - no doubt on the RS2 route here - but do the ££££ maths as well before you know what you are getting into for maximum benefit from it -
£ 750 RS2 Turbo
£ 450 RS2 EM
£ 200 RS2 (Bosch Green injectors)
£ 100 for RS2 or 7A EX CAM
£ 300 for RS2 or bigger IC
£ 100 for a 3bar VMAP (needed for ECU upgrade)
£ 500 for a custom remap
Lets call it somewhere between £2-2.5k unless you get some mega bargains along the way and assuming you end up with ~380bhp at the end of it... Thats 25 quid per bhp gain over a homefried ABY - which was 5 quid per bhp gain against stock.
This modification lark has some exponential costs if you aren't careful. Now think about the spend required for 500bhp and beyond !

turbo i use is an sc6152. its probly a tad more now. maybe a bit big for your liking.
i just feel the rs2 route costs plenty for what you get and some careful buys can get as good a solution if not better for less. all personal opinion.
id say i have around 6k in mine now. exhausts are not cheap and neither is the intercooler kit, engine work, suspension etc but i feel its well worth it.
at around the 2.5k spend mark i was on std brakes with around 400hp and soggy shocks. it was too fast for itseld basically but a great drive all the same. that was turbo, exhaust, vems, injectors, boost controller and little else.
there are plenty of choices out there and most work good. all i can say is budget for the other bit too.Comment

Sound advice, you want to make sure you're happy with the car chassis wise before investing in power upgrades, the brakes are of particular importance as the standard arrangement is not really adequate.turbo i use is an sc6152. its probly a tad more now. maybe a bit big for your liking.

I've picked up a K26 for the S2 but I can't seem to find any info on what power they can make and what chipset is available ?
I've also got a AVCR gathering dust that I should really install too, has anyone used the Apexi on their engine ? if so what were the gains like ?Comment

Really thought alot about the GT3071 and as above is a better purchase in the long run BUT I would then have to include skats, fitment, maybe a MAF issue, pipework, air filter etc ...
My brain kinda takes me the route that there is some basic stuff such as
£ 200 RS2 (Bosch Green injectors) - got
£ 300 for RS2 or bigger IC - got
£ 100 for a 3bar VMAP (needed for ECU upgrade)
£ 500 for a custom remap
and with the RS2 turbo as a bolt on gives a nice 350 bhp give or take with relatively no hassle with fitting and load s of fun, happy days ... for sure with time and less impatience the GT would be a better bet but the skats and bottom end work is beyod my abilities and tools to be honest soooooo .... in teh future the RS2 Turbo can be sold and then with even more time spent on the forum
i`ll have ago at the skats
Unless you can unleash some more of the Mr Nugent wisdom ?

the AVC-r is a decent boost controller. its fairly simple to setup and gives good results. what i dont like about the AVC-r is the clicky solenoid. thats normal ive seen at lest 6 of these units. the size is also an issue for me to fit to a german dash.
tighten the duty right up at the bottom end to aid spoolComment
