Combine the light race titan retainers with lightweight hydraulic lifters (VAG 050109309J ) - ~56g (Meyle product 100 109 0029) and you save about 300gr of moving weight per cam compared to original hydraulic lifters.
Lightweight lifters is a no brainer, and can extend the rev range without having to go to stiffer springs (stiffer springs cause a parasitic loss through friction and sap power everywhere in the rev range).
The weight saving per dollar/quid is much higher for the lifters than for the titanium retainers

Lightweight hydraulic lifters are OEM, and have been around for a long time.
Got them on my Golf, along with the light Supertech valves, I can rev that 2L 8v to 8K on stock springs (but it doesn't make any power up there)

Espen - can you please advise part number on these lighter OEM lifters ? I assume if good for 16V Golf then good for I5T... I had simply no idea that VAG had introduced them at some point.
I'm not so interested in lightweight lifters for 8000rpm (got an ECU rev limiter to overcome 1st and a K24 is well past maximum puff at this point) but its more to increase 'revability' if it helps the engine accelerate faster with less losses on the valvetrain - gut feel is that its less of an impact than going from DM to SM flywheel for example, but if building a head then it makes sense to me that the lightest reliable lifters available should be used.
D'oh - just realised Tommy posted it already - 050109309J - sorry... Looks like a common fitment on many many engines (4/6/8 cyl) from mid nineties, versus the 034109309AD of the I5T engines.
According to my system here at work (I can't vouch for the accuracy of the figures - they are normally correct but there is no substitute to actual measurement):
That gives a saving of 12g per lifter, so 120g per cam.
Looking at the other weights my system lists (again no guarantee of accuracy) there is a lot of weight in the other valve train components. Total listed per lifter is 261g (not including the lifter)!!! This seems very high so said I would prefer to see an accurate measurement rather than these numbers before drawing any conclusions.

the best intentions are fraught with disappointment - gil grissom
Lighter valvetrain components will make the engine rev faster, but the effect is miniscule compared to lighter flywheels or lighter pistons/rods.
The reason is that the stroke is very short compared to the piston stroke, and these components move at only half of the engine speed. The main reason why people fit them is to extend the rev range.
You always want the softest valve spring that will not float at redline, lighter valvetrain components enable you to run a softer valve spring, thus having less power loss to friction.
I have a laugh when I read about people installing stiffer valve springs with stock cams and stock redline. All you get is a power loss at all rpms in addition to accelerated wear.

The weight measurement was based on scale measurements with old lifters
With light lifters and retainer ~30g each times 20 divided by 2 is about 300
For me it is not known what the old brand lifter is. There may be some inaccuracy in measurement but the alternatives are much lighter though expensive. All up to you to decide. If I was renewing the lifters in engine project, I would put the lightest ones available.

Okay, guys and gals, I am getting ready to redo the head on my 16v Passat and I went and splurged. I bought the lightened lifters from Vince @ QualityVW. Here are the numbers that are on the box.
