    Changing ABY Fuel Pump - Q & A

I've got the questions, hopefully someone has the answers?

Wanted to change my '95 ABY fuel pump with a like for like pump.

Opened up the lid of the actual tank and dislodged the white plastic inner cradle that the pump fits into, as I didn't realise that the two "clips" on either side can be pushed back slightly and the pump can be withdrawn carefully. i.e. no need to twist the cradle the pump sits in and dislodge it.

So now the pump is out, but the inner cradle cannot be withdrawn to see how it goes back together, even though it is very "loose" in the outer plastic cradle / basket?

Does anyone have a photo of the white plastic cradle pieces taken apart so that I can see how they work or any BTDTs for the easy re-installation of the white inner plastic cradle and then the pump itself?

Any pointers or information would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you.

    Done !

What a nightmare ! If anyone needs any info on this job, let me know. I now know it backwards unfortunately. Have the photos, but not able to post them up here.

On a '95 Avant, the most important thing is to recognise that the two tabs at the top of the cradle are moved back and the pump is pulled out using the pipe attached to the top of the pump, then change the pumps over. When re-installing the pump, note the orientation of the original pump and copy same. Photograph it to be sure?

The pick up at the base of the pump is off centre and so the new pump needs to be twisted to match the off centre hole in the bottom of the cradle.

On absolutely no account think that the two tabs should be used to twist the cradles as I did. You'll dislodge the 12 little black rubber anti vibration tubes that insulate the pump from the tank and which prevent a humming noise when the pump is working. It will do your head in if you do disturb them, BTDT big time.

    Hope the above helps somewhat.

    Kind regards.
