Has anyone got a pic of the 3b oil breather system?
I need to know where the pipes that come out the side of the engine block go.
If one of these breather hoses is split would this affect boost?
Hi Sal,
Newsh had a big split in his breather hose that comes out of the block, while pressurising the system with the tyre valve tool the air was pissing straight out of there. Not sure if he has fixed it yet?Newsh?

Yeah, I plugged the leak but the replacement hose for that on the late 3Bs is about 80 QUID! I unplugged the pipe and reconnected to the split hose as other wise the fumes in the car were terrible in traffic, It doesnt leak boost as such as its connected to the inlet pre turbo, but it does allow unmetered air into the system and so does affect running somewhat..
I'm still tossing up whether to go for a catch tank breather system but dont really want to lose the pcv system, not sure.
The two thick rubber pipes that make up the crankcase breather system on the S2 (3B) are expensive from Audi. They're about £100 for the pair from VagParts (unless the price has changed?) which is something like half the price you''ll pay from a stealer.
They will be perished on any early car that hasn't had them replaced in the past, due to the constant heat and oil saturation in them. They are a pain in the back to fit too!
A knackered pipe will affect running as it allows unmetered air into the system via the MAF to turbo hose.
i think it took me about 4-5 hours of knuckle skinning, swearing and backache to get the rubber hose round the back of the block changed. Total lack of working space in there with fuel lines, vac tubing and alsorts of other stuff makes this a real crappy job. Also you cannot 'see' what you are doing which doesnt help, so fix by feel...
Dan, your split is a bit worse because that goes straight into the inlet manifold. major leak!!
have you fixed it yet?

Got the replacement silicone tubing this morning, will attempt to replace it this weekend...
My car hasn't felt low on boost, and it was pretty darn quick at Bedford, but if I get more performance I'll be a happy bunny

Replaced 1b last year, the split I have now is in 1a, thats the 80 quid one..
If somebody wants to send me their tired old PCV hoses I shall get Samco to quote on replacements. Be damn sure they will be a lot cheaper than 80 quid !

the 3B breather for the S2 is a bit different than on the 200 20v- the valve on the S2 is right over the crankcase, where on the 200 20v, its on the back of the head. On the 200, the last 6 inches or so near the crankcase tends to get mushy, collapse and split over time. Replacement is only available from Audi and is over $100 USD from the dealer. Has anyone looked into using the METAL replacement part that Audi made for the 7a (2.3 Ltr 20v non turbo motor)? its shaped like a doll's elbow. Saw this retrofitted on a 200 20v 3B
Just an idea....
