    Valve tappets noise

    Hi!

I'm working on a upgraded S2 with a 3b engine, it has a new oil pump, new valvepushers / tappets (correct word?) and Quakerstate Mineral oil 20w50 , the engine has run about 2000km since a rebuild, and it sounds like a John Deere after about 30-40 seconds after start, I've first stated that the oil is rubbish and needs changing, but now I'm getting more concerned about this, if the oil doesn't solve this problem, and I guess the tappets / pushers too could be faulty even though they are new, is there anything else that can cause this problem / noice, the oil pressure is good, the engine does have oil leaks , but it comes from the valve breathing system, and I think I've managed to sort that out, (did an engine wash to try and localize the leak more, but this was at least one leak)

This car has some real made in garage solutions (not done by me ofc) and its difficult to sort everthing out , seeing that the guy who owns this car is going to sell it, and is not willing to fork out any more dough on it than necessary.. What do you guys think, what else can cause tappets / pushers to sound like it's hammer time. I'm thinking about going with Castrol 10w60 or Redline 15w50 oil with ester base.

Quite a few have had serious tappet like noises that have turned out to be the PAS belt making a racket, sounds very similar. Just another thing to check

I also find that if the oil level isn't at the top then the tappets make a noise when the oil is hot after a thrash.

Do check this one. I have messed with different spec oils to cure 'tappet noise' only to cure it with WD40 on PAS belt

i know vauxhall xe engines once rebuild even with oem spec hydraulic tappets can make alot of noise until well bedded in, however youd think 2k would be well bedded in

is there enough oil getting to the head, may it have sat somewhere damp when was striped and oil supply to the tappets is blocked, isnt it a very small oil way feeds it

Okay thanks for the tip guys, I didn't know that could be a problem, but this clearly is a tappet noice , been working on these engines a few years now, just never heard of new tappets sounding this bad.

If its been converted to solid lifters then you need to make sure that the valve clearances are correct. On these engines that means measuring and machining down the lash caps that sit under the lifter on top of the valve stem.
Solid lifters aren't a plug and play fit, you get small variation in valve height and seat depth, it all adds up. Hydraulic lifters are always in contact with the lifter too, and so the cams are designed with this in mind, and as such have different ramp rates compared to a dedicated solid lifter cam, maybe this could be an issue?

If these are out then it will sound like an old tractor, as you said.

Hope you get to the bottom of it.

No it's still stock version of hydraulic lifters.
