RS2 owner needs advise from the experts

    Hi all.
Just registered tonight, must say you have a wonderful website.

There's not much difference between S2's & RS2's in many systems, perhaps someone out there could help or advise about a few problems I am having.

I have noticed that my engine fan does not "run-on" after switching off the ignition, even when the engine is hot enough for the fan to be running when the engine is on. I spotted that there was no fuse in position 5 in the fusebox, but there was no change even when I fitted one. What should I check first ?. Should the fan run-on, my old 90Q Sport 20v did.....

I have noticed that sometimes the engine feels a little lethargic, as if the turbo is a bit lazy. No other symptoms other than a little under the weather. Usually the turbo spools up around 3000rpm, just sometimes it does not want to know untill 4000 ish... a bit annoying, makes me vulnerable to Boxters...

Hope someone out there recognises these problems, any help would be much appreciated...

    Thanks

    Paul welcome to the forum

I don't remember if the fan on my CQ20V runs on after? I don't remember it doing so!

There are all sorts of things which the turbo lads may be able to advise on.

    Boost leak?

My fan always stops when I turn the ignition off.

It nevers runs on continually after i turn off the engine. Only a very few times has it ever come on again afterwards whilst the car is sitting - although it did do it the other day.

Hi Paul and welcome to the board!

The run on issue, the fan should indeed run on! I would get to the bottom of this one pretty quickly if you can. You would be very wise to check to see if the small electric water pump is working too once the ignition is off. If that one isn't working, then you could get some serious heat problems under the hood!

Things I'd do 1st in this sequence:

Check the fuse for the fan (you've done - no change)
Does the fan work at all? (probably does) so that can only leave.... either the temp. switch has expired, or maybe... the plug is off the switch!

As long as you know the rad fan is working at some point whilst you're driving, then we know the rad fan is ok as it uses speed two when the ignition is off. Speed one is only for when the air con is on, and speed three is a flat out hardly used speed really.

I am pretty sure that the switch for the after run fan is the two pin one in the water manifold, also take a look at the bigger switch in the manifold, just to make sure all teh plugs are on good. Maybe you'll get lucky and notice the plug is off!

Assuming the plug is on the switch, you have to assume the switch has probably had it. Replace.

What I suggest you also do is to check the electric afterrun pump too. Get the engine nice and hot and turn her off (so the fan *should* run!) loosen the header tank cap just a bit so the pressure in the water systems is released. Stand and watch the water level in the header tank, if the afterrun electric pump IS WORKING, then the water level in the tank will rise (only when it turns on though! so give it a few minutes)

If the fan doesn't come on and the water level in the tank does not rise, you have a problem! suspect the temp. switch is faulty and replace it.

Will try to find you a picture of the switches.

        Hope this helps?

As for the holding back, I'll let someone else answer that (boost leak!! again!!) whilst I find you a picture!

My fan turns off with the ignition also, and my after run pump doesnt work, i have changed the smaller sensor in the manifold, will be trying another relay for the after run pump soon, its never worked since ive had it (nearly 2 years)
your after run pump should run for a few seconds when you turn the ignition on.
mine does and it also comes on (with the main fan also) if i join the 2 terminals together on the smaller sensor in the water manifold. i lost my patience with this a while ago but want it sorting asap really.

              Martyn,

Thanks for all the advise, lots to check.

I know you !!!!..... silver S2 Avant ??, VAGPARTS Martyn ??... You have supplied a lot of parts for my car(s) (90 Quattro Sport 20v and RS2) in the past not to mention fantastic advice, thanks.

You might remember that I had both these temp sensor changed when I had the new radiator and hoses. I know that the water pump is working, had that checked bu AH Autos. IT SHOULD WORK..... I will go through your advice , maybee I have missed something...

              Thanks again..

Does this mean mine is fooked? The fan goes off when I turn the ignition off but has come on a few minutes later after the car has been stood and is all locked up
