Quote- If you don't need it WHY did AUDI fit it in the first place?

Not that silly a question, for one with limited mechanical knowledge.

When Audi, or any other manufacturer for that matter design a vehicle they take into account the extremes parameters the car maybe subjected to in use. From the Arctic circle to the equator, from sea level to the highest mountain passes ect. Hence the aux rad is required to ensure more than adequate cooling at temperatures far in excess of anything encountered in northern Europe. Audi also have a tendency to over engineer stuff 'well they did once anyway' hence the splendid build quality of our beloved old chariots. So it's surplus to requirements in Great Britain where the temperature never exceeds 37C, whereas in somewhere like Africa or Oz where it's often over 50C the extra cooling would be at the very least useful, if not essential.

If one is using an upgraded oil cooler then it's needed even less as the oil cools the engine as well as lubricating it. I'm fitting a 13 row oil cooler in the Aux rad location.

They also have a tendency to rot and are not cheap to replace with a brand new unit.

    Hope this helps you understand.

Mine is removed, as said above it is easier to work on. Drove up from Birmingham area to north of Scotland without stopping (except for fuel) in the summer, temp sat fine all the way. Not given the car a good work out yet as it's not running right, so can't answer how it reacts when getting some punishment.

I have a 16 row 115mm matrix cooler behind my grill and soon to upgrade to a 19 or 25row as oil temps still around 120degrees when caning it for long periods..

I was keeping mine because i liked the look of the samcos running up to it you could see them through the grill. looked cool i thought.. Then it started leaking and used the bungs that came with the samcos (thanks Paul) to remove the rad and i have not had a single problem YET>

Supposedly another reason why Audi fitted it, was since the Group N rally cars might need it.
4kg off the very front. Vastly better access to belts, etc.
Most important: much, much improved airflow over intake and turbo. With the radiator in place, these have virtually no cooling from airflow.

I found if my fan wiring came off the back of the fan (which is a common problem on alot of audi's due to audi not giving enough lead) that I could sit in traffic with the heater on and it wouldn't get hot and this was after a big run.
                Allisport rad? Can't find it

When on track I've seen way over 100deg water temp. As this is a track car it's a good idea to keep it cool

a new rad do0es wonders to temps. also an agent like water wetter.

                  im rid of mine.

as for oil. at present i have no cooler fitted and dont see high oil temps. goes to show. i may be a pussy driver with too much hp though.

i have a mocal cooler on the shelf. need to remember oil needs to be around 100 to be useful. too cool and its bad. the G60 was a prime example. the Glader boiled oil. however fitting a cooler could cause issues in winter when not hammering it. it wouldn't get warm enough. this is as much a problem for seals as hot oil is for wear.

the external coolers may need a christmas jumper knitting by granny.

Good point my 3B was fine last summer, in town on the motorway, whatever. That was running what I believed to be the original main Rad, with no aux Rad. My old rad was highly corroded and leaky. When removed I noticed it was about three times the weight of the new one I had to replace it which was the same Nissins metal type unit. I assume the extra weight was due a build up of corrosion and general crud within the Rad itself which must have been greatly reducing it's efficiency, so If she didn't get too hot then the old girl should be very happy with a new Rad.

I'm fitting a new Behr unit instead due to the bad feedback regarding the Nissens ones, the Behr one is also slightly lighter.

in Spain a lot of days in summer the temperature it is more than 50º , of course not in the shadow ...in the shadow 45º never more

i had track in Madrid with my S2 the 18 of october with a 27º in the shadow and my oil temperature after 15minutes of track driving was 130º¡¡¡

and i had to ON the AC sistem for take an extra fan cooling, because the water temperature was climbing hot to 95º ,but with the AC fan in the fast speed the temperature was 92º or 90º

                      Spain it´s different¡¡

Yeah, it's probably a very good idea to leave it on if you do most your driving in Spain, Italy the south of France ect.

i have been wondering why audi put the intake manifold the way they did, and not "reversed" OEM, and i just cant get an good explination exept:

The constructor were high on drugs/ really stupid
                          The constructor were really lazy
                          Or, he just didnt care..

RS2 water pump and cambelt is what would do that.

You don't need the thing if your car is moving

Only in standing traffic have I noticed a difference where the increased surface area helping with no airflow.
