When you were looking at the turbo, did you get hold of both rotors and try to turn them against each other? I'm wondering if one is spinning without the other .
Howling noise from turbo and no boost

That's correct, stiffer spring in the WG is not a good idea on the 3B, boost will climb fast and the ECU will go into failsafe mode (did so on mine anyway back in my Motronic days

I gess if I cant find another reason for not getting any boost then removing the turbo and fitting my old one is the only way, although I have to say when we remove the wastegate I checked that both ends of the turbo where spinning and that they where still intact.
The other thing we did before taking the wastegate of is to remove the maf hose in order to see into the front of the turbo, turned the engine over for a second with the key
and the bloody thing started,it was defo spinnihg then, and I think I am right in saying its the other end that drives it, but I do realize it was not under pressure at the time.
As for the wastegate it all seemed in working order, every thin was free and apeared to opperate as it should, but I must admit its the first time I have ever looked inside one
so I am no exspert, it did pass the suction test though.
Thanks for all your advise much appreciated

yes i'm still alive
yes the comp wheel had come into contact with the housing, the shaft was bent but would still spin ok.Quite bizarre really as i had taken it out one afternoon for a thrash, pulled it onto the drive and all was ok.Went back out in it the next morning and hadnt even gone 50 ft when that noise started, with zero boost of course, managed to limp it down to the workshop and spent about 2 hours looking for a non existant leak, pulled the turbo off and found carnage inside it

The sound I get is not metalic and its when you drive the car I must admit I havent reved it up that much on the drive way. What did you find when you inspected the turbo
what was the extent of the damage, bits every where or did you have to dissmantle it to find the damage.I am begining to think that after a witch hunt on everything else I may as well take the turbo of and have it inspected, hard to beleave its gone south after only
400 miles.Comment

several of the fins were twisted and there was a chip out of the impeller where it is in close contact with the cold side housing.I presume the broken piece past through the engine at some point but went fine(and still is afaik) after putting another turbo onComment

Thanks for that,I did inspect the blades for any damage and could not find anything,
however as I have now checked absolutly everthing else I am sending the turbo to be checked over,if it is the turbo I will need to find out what caused it as this is a brand new turbo and this should not of happened. If anyone has any ideas please let me know.

I had a very bad experience with a chinese turbocharger on a VW... the noise was exactly like that. I took the turbo out, and put all bits separately. The main shaft was cracked, the bearings weren't bad, exh impeller had one blade missing... and well, even the compressor wheel had to pay with it's live too. This turbo was a bolt-on K04s that a client brang me to install onto his Mk4 GTI. Oil and water lines were perfect so installation was fine but turbo! Are you sure your BorgWarner turbo is really a BorgWarner and not a bad copy?- Looking for a S2

Finally got round to taking the turbo of and as I feared it is the turbo, the shaft is bent and the blades have been touching the housing on the cold side.the blades are still intacked and turn freely but some have signs of having touched the housing at the ends and the shaft is not completly central on the cold side
Now the problem is to find out what exsactly caused this on a brand new turbo,so I am sending it to CR turbos to have a postmortem done before getting it refurbed.
I am also getting the car looked at to try and determine what could have caused this turbo to fail so quickly.Comment

Anyone have any pictures of Chinese rs2 copy turbo, I am prity sure the one I have is a genuine borg warner but it would be good to make sure before I get it repaired.
As I say this one looks right but then I have never seen a replica, if anyone can help I would be very greatful.Comment

Lou,
Sorry to hear this!
Can't say I have heard of/seen a RS2 turbo knockoff but it wouldn't surprise me if there was! After all they did the exhaust manifold and it took an expereinced eye to alert potential buyers of the differences apart from the poor alignment of the wastegate flange! Of course if there is a copy then it will duplicate the casting numbers etc and the packaging would be easy to replicate too.
There would be some pics on the RS2 Turbo Naked thread which might be useful. As I recall they were at least two turbine housings and some centre section differences used which would make a definitive ID problematic. Unless of course you can post any pics and I/others can have a quick look to see if we can notice anything different.
Unfortunately I believe that the RS2 turbo was a one off and shares only the centre section with other KKK turbos. So its not going to be cheap to rectify any damage which makes it another ballache!
I guess were will have to see what CR say. Perhaps the nut loosened and that allowed the comp wheel to walk towards the housing. But I would have said that the original shaft was designed to stop that occuring.
Not sure what the durability of a RS2 turbo is. I know of another members experience of an unexpected boost spike over 2 bar and that lived but the rods didn't! MRC's high boost chips are 1.9 bar I believe but whether thats to protect the bottom end or the turbo or both I wouldn't know!Comment
