Last year when i posted this thread i ended up using än accusump , worked as it should, but due to heat i seized a rod bearing so that old bpu engine (380hp) was sold in pieces. For next year om building a 800hp engine with a drysump system from Dahlbäck racing. You Will probably see it on nextyears gatebil events, black urq with retard racing stickers as for mechanical lifters i dont think there is a need för them until 9000rpm, but as far as i know most i5 engines make peak hp around 7800rpm so revving beyond 8500 wouldnt make sense..

The dry sump definitely isn't necessary at 8500 RPM. That is the common limit for those with uprated valve springs here in the US. Some even rev to 9k with hydros and stock pump, but I wouldn't recommend it for regular use that way.

I plan on doing a dry sump setup to rev to 11k this year. X6rs, why do you think the i5's peak at 7800? With a good set of cams, some head work, and a big enough snail, they can make power up MUCH higher with no problems.

        Thanks mates,
So - loxxrider and x6rs Do You think I can rev 9000 without dry sumping - just with hard springs and TI retainers? I plane to use oversize valves - 2mm for inlet and 0.5 for exhaust. Am I need to use super special oil, or other preparing/tuning/machining for the head and/or block - oil ports, oil pressure valve inside the oil pump or something??
        Cheers

I really don't have much first-hand experience with the stock oil system. I can only go from what I've seen others do. I know that Jeff Gerner (240 mph urS4) used a stock pump to rev to 9500 RPM for his 220 mph runs at Bonneville a few years back. He did eventually have a failure (stock pump) while going for his 240-250+ mph runs last year though. Now he is going dry sump. I've seen other people try to rev to 9k on their stock pumps and they've seen excessive wear on the pump upon tear-down. I think if you have a good, new pump, then 9k is probably OK. I would do it myself, but I wouldn't want to recommend it to anyone.

Set it up to 8100 rpm and problems solved ,that's enough I think

7800rpm peak Said a well known tuner here in sweden, he has mapped and dynoed alot of i5's, big turbos, cams lots of hp,you name it, how many Audi i5 have you seen with lots of power peaking at 10k rpm? As for using oversize valves, dont use them unless youre totally re engineer the head, the ports and combustion chamber and seats dont allow bigger valves than oem, just measure them and see for yourself, you just End up with bigger valves but same or worse flow. By re engineering i dont mean just a port job, you will need to alter the whole design and that aint cheap or easy, bigger valves is a waste of Money in my opinion. A stock head flows for 800ish hp with other cams so a port job for drivability Will Do just fine

I still don't really see what you mean by 7800 RPM peak. Power is a function of RPM, so as long as you can flow the air, you can make more power. I have personally driven (mine and others) I5's which make peak power higher than 7800 RPM. The reason you don't see more builds making peak power at 10k RPM is because it is very expensive. Hopefully I can prove my point with my build this year!

Yep - probably can buy one, but I;m not pretty sure that the engine will survive at more than 7500-7600 rpm - even with new original oil pump....

Sure it will, easily. For example kenax has used 8300rpm limiter without problems with a old stock pump. You can also get a uprated crmo gear for the stock pump if you wan't.

You can rev to 8k safely on a completely stock engine. I have done it for years on a never-opened 180k 3b.

I think your missing the point here chaps. Revs is only half the story.

If your building a high hp motor and your going to abuse it on the track or on the strip you really need to think how your going to keep your motor lubricated when its under G forces?
