What turbo to put in the RS2?

i had a similar setup to Ross with my RS2, with a stock head and uprated rods and pistons(mahle, not je). I was making around 425hp on my calculator(performance box) and extremelly fast spool on the 3071 .63AR and VEMS. I must say that the turbo ran out of power after around 5500rpm on most gears though.
Maybe comp has something better to offer there, but i doubt you would see something tremendously different.
If you do a cyl head porting though, you will get more.Comment

Unfortunately, my Original RS2 turbo expired back in November.
I've attached a sound clip for those interested in what it sounded like. Clip recorded from inside the car whilst driving along very slowly in second gear 5-25 mph between speed bumps. Gauge reading -0.5 to 0 Bar, no higher as I was a bit concerned!!
- Visual inspection showed that the end of one of my turbine blades had cracked off
As I needed a new or re-conditioned turbo and didn't want to spend loads on changing other components, fitting a Hoffer76 Hybrid Turbo made a lot of sense - especially as Rich was also able to supply the chipset to run it. I also look forward to getting some dyno figures as it feels stronger than it did. Ideally a hub dyno, if I can find one with the right adapters.... I've also noticed improvement to economy (when not booting it around) as well as it feeling smoother transitioning on/off heavy throttle.
More recently, Rich serviced the wastegate (pictures enclosed) and added a 1.9 Bar spring - his chip set was mapped using a 1.9Bar spring. On the last visit, Rich also fitted a 3" downpipe (from the recent group buy) and fabbed it up to the Milltek. The DP is a good fit - even managed to squeeze the CV heat shield back on!
Thanks to both Rich and Nero
I've now got a full 3" turbo back exhaust running into a Milltek centre and back box. V-Band 100 cell race cat, with a de-cat pipe on the side. It's good, but I'm considering adding an additional small silencer in place of the cat. I'm too old for it to be anything other than OEM quiet for the longer trips!Last edited by Lloyd; 27 February 2011, 19:15.RS2+ (now sold...)Comment

Zip it.
Also, the thing is, you won't gain anything from that exhaust without a remap.
A freer flowing exhaust allows you to run more boost or more timing, but your chipset is not mapped for more boost or timing.
And no, motronic won't magically up the boost or increase your timing. It doesn't even know the amount of air going into the engine.Comment

Also,
I'm kind of curious as to the chipset you sell Hoffer76.
440cc injectors, 1.9 bar spring sounds exactly like what 034 Motorsports offer:
Considering you have stated on the forum, that you have ordered these chips before, are you copying their work illegally?
Or do you have an agreement with them?
This is starting to sound fishy.Comment

Thanks - have zipped it and added it to the above post.Zip it.

I can only comment as an amateur consumer but it feels better at spool and at the top end with the new DP. Placebo effect? Maybe... Will get a plot soon with luck. (I am running RS2 injectors btw.)RS2+ (now sold...)Comment

I don't know what there is to think.
But if the HP rating is correct, you need a standalone ECU as well. This old motronic is no good much past 550hp.
Also, you will need at least 630cc deka's, better 700cc.Comment

Hey Jeffer
I would highly recommend Comp Turbo to you. I have their CT43-6768 BR billet compressor turbo and I love it. This turbo has a few supporting mods and has pulled 755hp at the wheels. The turbo is rated to go to 960hp crank and there's a little left on the table so that is totally believeable. Here's a link to their catalog:
Comp Turbo manufactures high performance turbochargers, wastegates, blow-off valves, and components engineered for proven power, fast spool, and lasting reliability.
From this catalog I'd recommend the CT3-5856 billet compressor turbo for your stated needs plus a little headroom. Both my cars have billet compressors. My A4 has a K-16 based journal bearing turbo with said billet wheel and of course my Comp and they really do work well.
