Should I get a shock off this?!!

Been trying to get the bottom of annoying intermittent fluttery missing I've got on the 3b Been gradually getting worse over the past few months and not managed to get to the bottom of it yet.

It’s – its not particular violent – not like its jerking about the road - more of prolonged fluttering / loss of power throughout general driving which I would say was a slight “missing “.

So, I was pulling the plug boots off one by one to try to isolate which cylinder in particular is off and got quite a belt when I pulled the lead to cylinder 2 off (well the second from the front). Just touching the top of the lead where it becomes the boot gave me quite a slap! Doesn’t happen when I touch the other leads -so is this normal?

I’ve put in new spark plugs, swapped the leads & power amplifier to no avail. Cleaned the earth ring attachments to the intake manifold and she did seem to be running better – but still hicced under full boost, so I don’t think Ive sorted it.

Dizzy and cap were replaced last year when I had to swap the whole dizzy after the gear sheared. Cant see any obvious splits or anthing to indicate an obvious boost leak.

When it’s fluttering I can put my foot to the floor and absolutely nothing happens boost wise, until it all kicks back in and normal service is (very) briefly resumed.

Timing could be an issue but all seemed spot on when I first putthe rpelacement dizzy in - or do I have an earth problem?

    cheers

    Paul

Sounds like the insulation has broken down on that lead which would be the cause of it misfiring under load. Replace ASAP!

You need to stop earthing your coil through your body. Its a practice that could lead to your loved ones finding out you had a heart defect!

Replace them all then. If one is bad, chances are the others are dodgy!

Problem is I’ve already swapped all the leads for a spare set I had. Trouble is - and this is where I'm starting to confuse myself - the duff Cylinder2 lead is one that I swapped, so I've had to put the the original back on! So I could well be swapping bad for bad! Ive taken Andy up on his offer so hopefully I will get a set where I know all the heads work!

As you have stated at the end, you really need to start with a known good set! There is no getting away from it!

I sure do! I swapped the whole set that was on for for my spare set, but that didn’t seem to make any difference – and then I found that lead to cylinder 2 was trying to kill me!! Thanks to AndyP I’ve sorted a replacement set that I know are good so that will give me a proper starting point.

At the minute if feels that I'm never going to get to the bottom of this not convinced its the leads but at the this way I will kniow one way or the other!

                      Hi Paul

Best thing to do mate is when it is dark start the car lift the bonnet get someone to rev the motor up and look for the light show(sparking/ earth out) while they are going that ..most likely king lead from coil is arking at some point I would guess

                      Cheers

Leads always play up worse in the mornings when its cold and damp

Otherwise, have you done a boost leak test?
