Catastrophic engine failure

It's possible a piece of debris did just enough damage to, e.g., an oil cooler line or the turbo drain line to cause loss of oil too small to be obvious when driving but enough to drain the sump in six miles.
Not seeing a warning could be because the oil pressure warning light isn't working - I've seen three this year already. Always check the oil light comes on when you switch the ignition on.Comment

The wastegate was checked when the turbo blew and was working ok it was the correct size and had never been tampered with, diaphram was ok. both water and oil lights came on when the engine blew.
I will open the engine and post some pictures ASAP but the car is at a friend commercial garage and he wants it done all at once, both engines out and doner engine straight in.As he is not chargeing me for the facility I have to respect his wishes.
In the mean time any advise as to the best way to swap the engines,ie with or without gearboxes would be much appreciated.Comment

That's a VERY tall order. The 'gotcha' rate doing engine swaps is enormous and with some parts very hard to find it could easily sit for a few weeks.Comment

with gearbox would be my choice, if its a 5 speed coupe then leave the shafts/hubs together and slide it all in on a hoist/load leveller then you just have the linkage and prop bolts to do up at the back. The wastegate was checked when the turbo blew and was working ok it was the correct size and had never been tampered with, diaphram was ok. both water and oil lights came on when the engine blew.

If all goes well ...
Then you come across a bolt that some monkey lad has dipped in blue Loktite and overtorqued.
Or the right engine mount nut spins even with an air wrench and the Allens securing the bracket to the block have all been rounded out.
**** happens. Getting away with it a few times doesn't mean you won't one day hit a showstopper - it's best to plan for that.Comment

For all the cost of gaskets, and the hassle if they leak, just replace the EM and DP ones anyway.
Are you sure you don't want to put in rods?
I can understand why your mate wants to take it out/put it in in one go, its not about doing it in a day or two, its about not forgetting what goes where, not having **** laying around for ages etc. My engine was out for months, its a bloody nightmare trying to remember where everything is!Comment

Mad****** I could not agree more, I have had this engine out twice before, and it sat around for sometime, labeled all the parts and photographed everything, but when it came to putting it back together again in the reverse order I had forgotten, and as this is one exspireance I defo want to forget,I am not taking any chances'
I am a not cabinet maker not a mechanic,so we will see how long it takes.Comment

That's what digital cameras are for. A 14mp Sony Cybershot T99 lives permanently in my right pocket. Focuses down to 1cm. I use a laptop with a card slot on the front so I can look at any picture really close up.Comment
