    ARP head bolts

    Hi guys,

What is the right torque setings for arp head bolts?? Like oem:

    Step I 40Nm-29 ft lb
    Step II 60Nm-44 ft lb
Step III 180º or 90º+90º are permissible

I will fit a metallic Victor Reinz gasket

    Thanks!

This one comes up a lot and there is varied opinions but usually people go for what it says in the ARP box (IIRC 65ft/lb)

Also, once built, bring the engine to full temp and allow to cool overnight, re check torque. Do this again after around 250 miles and 1000 miles.

If you have a look HERE from my project thread you can see that using the supplied ARP washers is not such a good idea! Either use your old washers by cutting the head off the bolts, or get sport quattro washers.

Hi, I couldn't find the torque in the box...tomorrow I will search it, Is it possible that the 3 step (180º) could manage the same torque as 65 ft/lb??

Thank you very much for the info about ARP head washers and torque check , but I haven't got time to find and buy sport quattro head washers, I'm going to use my old washers because I need to end the engine for next week and I haven't got many time....but I write the ref. in my notebook for the "next" future

      Thanks!

        No problem.

The sp quattro washers are available from audi next day usually, but the standard ones are still better than ARP.

The OEM torque is WAY too much for ARPs, for one, you are moving a nut not a bolt...

I am pretty sure (Edit: - Deffo) it is 65ft/lb. There are people that use from 50 up.

I did 25, 45, 65. Remember that you have to use ARP lubricant with these figures, put it on the treads, washers etc...

11mm ARPs? 88 is WAY too much IMO. IIRC the OE bolts are 85, and as they are bolts they have a higher friction on the threads etc.

Out of interest, what is 88NM? ... goes off to check ... 88.1NM = (can you guess?!) 65 Ft/LB... Think that is your answer!

No, I mean, they have written in ink 88 right, and after it says Ft/Lb in print? I suspect they have written the NM figure by hand by mistake...

No, 88 will pull the washers into the head. Heat cycling and retorquing after around 250 and 1000 has been proven to be required.

Just as an update (which I did on my thread linked above), the Sp q washers work out at around 66% larger surface area...
