    Coil issue

    Hi,

I have an audi s2 3b `91 coupe, running on Vems.

For half a year ago it was converted to 5 seperate OEM coils, like an aby, plugged into the vems ecu.
    whitout any problems.

Now I have recently bought the AAN high output coil kit Plug in from 034motorsport, and installed it.

    But they wont spark.

I`ve installed it as shown on the pictures.

Am i right on the pictures, with the way i did the wiring?
Or am i doing something wrong..

And do you have to make any adjustments in vems?

    Anyone got an idea?

    Thanks.

    -Jacob-

Are you plugging those into the correct harness locations?

The three pin power plugs need to go into the two white harness connectors on the firewall. The four pin ignition control plugs need to go to the appropriate harness connectors that were once connected to the ABY Power outout stage (POS) units. The four pin connector to the harness connector with four wires, including the one ground on Pin 2, and the other to the one with three wires (for 4 and 5 and a ground) - your second connector does not have a ground - probably grounded otherwise. Have a look at these two diagrams:

thanks for your reply, but i dont have all that on the picture.

      Mine is originally 3B.

I still use the 3B engine loom.

Fair enough. You still have to make sure that you have the 034 coils connected so they have power with the ignition on, via the 3 pin connectors (however you did it) and you still have to make sure that the 4 pin connectors are connected properly. On this latter point, you have to be running an AAN or ABY ECU or VEMS equivalent to drive the five 034 coils. That is where the second diagram comes into play.

We tried to solve this on the Dutch S2power forum with Jacob, and eventually I thought it might have got to do with the 6V coil charge times I used on my setup using Megatune, but I just learned these can not be set in VEMStune......

People are running 034 HO coils with VEMS so VEMS is not the issue. I suspect basic wiring problems.

Either that or he also has a G4 crank position problem, e.g. no pin on the flywheel.

So I'm running this kit, I have been using it on VEMS and I know back on motronic.

The ring terminals should be grounded to the chassism they are for grounding of the ttl.

The 034motorsport harness has two plugs for +12V to the coils and ground. Decided to use the +12V signal and ground from the old 3B coil. So your assumption is correct, that one of the pins in the two plugs is for ground, the rest is for power.

You should try and measure which pin is for ground of the 6 pins in the two plugs.

According to 034motorsport the Pin layout for the coil is:

Pin A: ECU TTL High (Trigger) -
Pin B: TTL Ground - Edit - SHould be connected to ground.
Pin C: Secondary Ground - If my memory is correct then this goes to ring terminal
Pin D: Battery Ground - Edit - This goes to ring terminal and should according to 034MS be earth at the cam cover.
Pin E: Battery +12v - If used the +12V from the old single coil for all five coils.

Thats the one that says "ground" on the picture, brown cable with white stripe.

That is the only wire connected to all of the coils, the other 5 are each connected to a different coil.

I have also checked my fuses, they are ok, and the coils are getting 12V, so I`m a little stuck here..

You mean the one whit the little eye on the end for an m6 bolt?

they are now on the camcover.

12V I get from the thick cable (m8) on the alternator that charges your battery..

and earth i presume from the 2 cables bolted on the camcover.. Like OEM.

I`va added a picture as it is now.

I have used OEM AAN connectors.

Yikes! That is NOT where I would get coil power. I would go to a switched 12V, gee, like the old power to the original 3B coil. I hope you at least have inline fuses between the alternator and the coils.

I agree you should not take the power directly from the alternator.

                            Edit:

Ok looking at your pictures I would do the following:

You can take power from theold 3B coil plug, I did this. Meaning you need two plugs with 6 wires. 5 of those wires you solder onto the +12V from the old 3B coil plug. You could use a ring terminal as a soldering point.

The connection to the chassis with your ring terminals should be fine.

Your current ground on the shaft that holds the coils. I dont think your actually have a good earth there, looking at the picture I can't see how that shaft could be connected to the chassis in any way.
I think this may be your main problem, and this wire should be grounded and you could use the old 3b coil plug earth. I did this.

Also please don't take the power directly from the alternator. It would be much better to simply use the pre existing source from the 3B coil plug as mentioned above. (I have removed the bit about the rectifier since it was wrong).

On a site note I would solder the wires and use Heat-shrink tubing instead of using connectors. But this is just my personal preference, or atleast put heat-shrink tube over the connectors to make it look a little bit nicer.

                              Thanks Jonas R.

I will change my earth and power source like you said.

And the power from the alternator, thats done by my tuner, not myself,
The OEM coils always runned fine on it.

And the cable-connectors i use, are with solder within, as you heat them the solder melts the wires together, and there isnt no heat shrink tube over it yet, cause i wasnt sure if i had to change it again.

I always use heat shrink tube..

                              Thanks again!.

I will let you know wether it worked or not.
