Catastrophic engine failure, the follow up

I thought it would create a follow on thread to my engine failure earlier this year, just to show other members what to exspect.I have to say it has been difficult at times, mostley dissiding which is the right way to go.
You set out on what you think is the best coarse of action, then some one suggests a better way which throws you into doubt.
This is the story so far.I bought a doner car with what I thought was a good engine but with a smokey turbo, thinking I could get away with a quick swap, this was not to be, on closer inspection it was not just the turbo. This ment another engine or a complete rebuild,me being a gluten for punishment dessided on the later.
The engine after I sold the doner car was basicly free so it seemed the right thing to do.
I was still addement that I should keep the hamer down and complete the project,so I stripped out the engine and found it needed a rebore, which means new pistons, the crank need grinding, both mains and big ends. The head from the doner car had been polished and ported and came with a 7A cam which was a bonus, but it had suffered a litle corossion around the water ways, not to bad but it was not as good as the head on my car so I used my original head.
When the head was stripped out,it was 117.9 through the bolt holes,Audi say the minnimum IS 118.1. problem number one had arrived what to do next.
The head had obviously been skimmed before, but it was in much better condition than the other head,so I am using it with a thicker gasket made from two gaskets.
The next problem was with the block, first the deck needed a skim and the front locating dowl
would not budge, front one went right through the casting so could be punched out from under neath, the front one i s stop drilled and would not move, and as are harden you can drill them out.
As you can see there are problems after problem, and it is not the end of them.
However I will try and add some pictures to help explane the 0ther issues,of which there are many.
On a brighter note I have picked up the engine bits today and they are now all cleaned and prepped for the rebuild, along with the new pistons, conrods and gaskets,so wish me luck and I will post some pics as soon as I can

      LMFAO

and to the OP, **** happens...the key is learning from our mistakes (and others) and ending up with something we're proud of in the end. Thanks for sharing the details, as it is not always easy to expose your errors for the sake of the community.

if the dowel is seized and no way of knocking it out you could get it spark eroded.

Well I find that amazing, you post some info that you think is of use to the community, and you get some prat with 23 posts pulling you up on your spelling. If this is what this fourm is all about then its time to look for another one where people are interested in THE S2 and not how to spell it.However as I am dislectic I find some words like tnuc easy to spell,as for the word tnuc look it up in the forum .how to behave ,com :corey::corey:

Try some heat on the dowel pin, mine were stubbon but a bit of heat and a tap with the hammer soon had them out

Ignore the trolls and keep up the good work, it will be worth it in the end

Know exactly what it's like to get a series of bad things with cars happen- usually a string of foul-ups...just when you can least afford it...So wishing you all the best with the rebuild !

Don't often see the spelling police on here!

Sounds like you're making some progress, good luck getting it sorted.

This is the important bit, keep the faith. We all want to hear the engine roar when you get it started.

Thanks for sharing your update for everyone's benefit.

Don't let the spelling issue phase you, being able to see the funny side is essential when you own an S2.

I can empathise with you about things not going smoothly with old cars, but it should be worth it in the end, say for about five months until the next problem arrives.

Keep the faith, and keep the thread updated as appropriate, photos if possible.

Your mood will lift when you're pushed in to your seat as the turbo boosts.

                    Kind regards.

                        Fair play.

I actually thought it was quite funny. Although it is easy to overlook the fact that not everyone has the ability to express first class grammar and punctuation.

Good work 220, keep us posted... I see we share the same town. Think I might have sold you, or your lad some black leather S2 interior... on the M4?

Its me that should make the apologies, I was on a very short fuse at the time, half an hour before my original post this happened thanks to my engine block.
