AAN Engine transplant into VW T3 Transporter

    Hi all,

I'm in the middle of fitting an AAN into my T3 Bluestar Transporter and could do with a little help with wiring...

All the wiring diagrams I've seen have either only put pin numbers or text saying what each pin is for the ECU.

I've got the engine loom, ECU, Immobiliser ECU with transponder ring/key and know my way generally around VW/Audi looms but I'd just like to check that there isn't something particularly different about the AAN loom which needs more wires than feed, ign feed, earth etc connecting up to get it to fire up.

I have the loom all connected up to the engine and have been trying to get the engine to fire but without success.

I have a few extra wires left over which I expect are for things like brake reservoir sensor etc but I've no wiring diagram to check them against.

I rekon this is probably for the speed sensor?

    Oh yeah... what's this?

    Cheers

    Oh, this is the van...

    It'll be running a Porsche 996 6 speed gearbox with ABY flywheel/clutch.

My daily driver is a T3 Syncro 16 with an Audi 2.5TDi AAT.

    Cheers

It is and it should be hooked up to the ECU. Here is some F96 info:

The AAN needs a particular set of inputs before it will fire, e.g. engine speed sensor, crank position sensor and cam position sensor. Miss one of them and it will never start. You might want to go through this AAN Motronic Pin-out that I did. It includes the wire colours so it *should* help you to figure out if the left over plugs are serious or not (I really don't like the fact that you have any thing left over, unplugged):

Not sure if this AAN engine bay harness helps you or not. (It needs to be labeled)

Thanks all for your info and help.

I am looking into using the Porsche 4WD system but it's going to involve changing front suspension parts in order to get the drive to the hubs.

Vanfest was fun. Hoping to do something bigger and better next year.

Here's my version in a rusty syncro:

                        2.5 10vt with porsche 951 turbocharger and AAN/ABY motronic...
Pretty much fully custom engine based on T4 AAF/ACU

It's also a bit tight fit with South Africa type bellhousing.

                        And the result:
                        -

                              Hi Porkkis,

Are those Albins gears or stock? With there being so little left I can't tell

If they were stock, I'm not suprised that they have died. You can do the same with only a 2.5 Subaru.

Here's a link to a thread I've put up on a U.S forum. It's a bit long so I won't repost it up here as the post would suddenly jump my a few pages

Classified ads, photos, shows, links, forums, and technical information for the Volkswagen automobile

I have had to rebuild the gearbox in Limey (my daily driver) about 6 times over the last 3 years due to 275ftlbs of torque from the 2.5TDi. I have now backed off the power to try to keep it more reliable.
