    Oil ways into ARP rods

Having embarked on the rebuild engine journey, I noticed that the rods I brought have no oil ways for the big end bearings. Is it worth getting an oilway spark erroded to allow for such a function?....

    cheers

you mean get the rod modified for forced oiling to the small end like the OE rods?

sorry, modified....similar to standard rods....it is for the big end bearings as the small end has them...

Do you mean your rods aren't riffle drilled? I don't think you can do this after they've been made

Big end is fed from the crank, but yes not all rods have the oil way for the small end. I asked about this in the SPM rod group buy, i think Aelred referred to it as Riffle Drilled, and would have cost more than the rods to do. Well worth doing if possible.

Yep riffled drilled as per post 4, you cant do this to a rod afterwards I've been told by Pauter. Mine had them though but the Scats didn't

can't imagine why you can't do it after they're made, its not like they are forged with the oilway in them.
Never been very impressed with the passive pin lubrication of the Scat type rods, but if the cost is the same as a set of generic rods anyway, may as well throw £800 at some Pauters or Carillos

question is.... why would you want to have this done?

so many people have been using rods without these and are fine.

Unless you are building a super high tech engine, some of these upgrades i think are not worth the bother!

It gives far better pin lubrication as the pin sees oil pressure, rather than relying on indirect "splash" oiling from the oil squirters etc. Not really an upgrade, the stock rods use this to oil the pins. If the factory saw it as necessary i think it is worth doing.
IMHO these small differences are why our engines do 200k easily, whereas french & jap crap struggles to make 120k most of the time.

good thing is we have real time results.

scat rods dont have it, and it doesnt cause any problems. So i guess every1 can form their opinion as to if it is needed or not. My rods have done little over 100k kms now, no signs of wear, and also no signs of significant wear on any bearings that we removed either.
If there is a problem in the oil system, personally i dont think that mod will save a bad event.

it wasn't so much an upgrade more like replicating the original idea from Audi...the more lub the better...

the idea came from the thought of bearings not getting sufficient lubrication....

it turns out it is a very costly exercise so unless I can find someone else to do this, it won't be happening....

thanks for the advice and if anyone knows if it can be done relatively cheapily...

It's not there to stop a bad event it'sthere to prevent pin wear
