I was concerned with wear at the big end....as the small end has the oilway so not affecting pin wear etc...

you could look at broaching the big ends to increase oil spray to the underside of the piston and you could cross drill the crank pins to increase lubrication to the big end... but i don't think that's an issue to be fair.

broaching!!!....now its getting a bit serious...I was just thinking of having the rods spark erroded and now your talking about broaching...

          sure i agree.

          but
          1) i wouldnt go about tampering with a product that has been machine manufactured unless someone knew what they were doing.

          2) OR even better buy a product that has those ready from factory. ie peuter rods.

To the question of adequate lubrication and bearing wear, for me the answer is clear. Lubrication is adequate without them. Ill dig a photo of my bearings post 100K kms for you from the recent rebuild.

this hole is there to prevent piston pin wear.

              piston pin = gudgeon/wrist pin?....

the rods have this it's the big end I am thinking about...like Thuppu's pictures

They are harvestin oil from the big ends bringing it to the piston pin.

of course feeding the underside of the pin....

You don't know what you are talking about, sorry.
You keep saying big ends !
The big end is fed oil from the crank which gets its pressure from the mains and the oil passes through the crank to the big ends.

If you say so, imo it was there standard as a reason so as to not to have to rely on splash lubrication.

I wouldn't build an high powered engine without one especially as it cost virtually nothing to add to the price when buying new rods

it's alright, its been said before....

I have it in my minds eye that the oil passes through the crank and into the mains but how can it get to the bearing face if there is nowhere for the oil to go i.e. hole in big end would allow oil to flow into the small end, the same as standard rods...

the wasted oil exits from the sides of the big end IIRC.

audi must have thought it a pretty good idea...

It does cost! Check a price difference between pauter and scat rods!

Having said that, If I was building a 700hp engine I would have probably use such rods, which brings me to the original statement that certain things are needed only when you are doing a very high end engine

No, the oil does not pass through the crank to the mains the oil comes from the mains from the main bearing oil feed in the block, the hole in the crank main journal passes oil through the crank to the hole in the big end journal to feed the big end bearing and then through the hole in your con rod to the little end (if you have a hole).
