My coil packs are 06E 905 115E i haven't included the N122 and N127 units usually found in the later S2's. Distributor is the standard 3b s2 unit.

Sounds like a phase issue the cam sync is not in the trigger window
Have you reversed the vr pins or used a cable?
Have you followed the aan guide on the vems wiki?

Back to basics, roll the car forward in gear to set the flywheel "0" mark in the bellhousing window on compression stroke (inlet and exhaust valves closed - cyl 1). heck that the marks ine up exactly in the dizzy.

Pins have been swapped red and violet as per here on the blacl plug for the crank sensor,

Dizzy and Timing haven't been touched or moved, all i've done is pin swap and wire the coils - plug in the VEMS ECU. One point worth mentioning last night i put petrol into my intake and tried to start again, a couple of pops out of the idle control valve. The intake was red hot as if the coils fired with the intake valve (s) open and set fire to the petrol inside. This must be a timing issue ?!?

recording of coil packs firing, at first only no 1 and 4 fired. vems test output screen and all seemed to fire, turned engine over again and here is the video.

one question, what is the normal cranking speed for an S2. With my plugs in i get 190rpm.

Here is my timing, pic shows where strobe light flashes on number 1. These are the settings in my ecu. I set TDC after the trigger to 64 and the timing marks aline while cranking with strobe gun.

                Where should it be ???

You cant use that mark, it's not accurate as it moves on the bolts. You have to strobe the line on the flywheel through the window on the gearbox passenger side.

If your setting is 64 it sounds like you have an old ecu without cam invertor

With a lot of help (and very greatful for it) my car started and run, gone back later today to do some logging and now it won't fire at all. Having horrible thoughts of giving up now and breaking my S2. P*ssed off is putting it lightly..
