What budget? Do your kids grow some legs already? Otherwise i'd go for the BMW 335d touring. Best package if it goes for smoothness, shear power, handling, space, cruising comfort, and "affordable"-good money-for-value car. A colleque drives one, insane power from zero revs, RS2 killer
.
He still drives it under dealer warranty though, I wouldn't like to pay the maintenance bills though... it had a new steering rack, rear subframe & wishbones, and some electronic gizmo's fixed within three years. I'm sure it'll drain you once it gets even older (like the rest of it's generation/class/spec unregarded which (german) make)
Whatever you choose, think wisely. No matter how many opinions on here it is you that has to drive it and ultimately pay for it.

I mean, it's not as bad as the new ones with 3 turbos

Forget turbos, get a Holden with a big v8, take any abuse, when the body rots stick the engine in a Jag
That's what I should have doneComment

The last jag I saw, that was the same age as my S2, the hole floor was rusted through and my friend who's garage it was at said upon further inspection it was a total rust bin.Comment

If as I suspect Rocco, you are into Audi. Then its a UR S6 Avant with a remap, all day long.
Less money than all the other options,so that would go along way to compensate for the extra fuel bills over a deisal.
Unlike my S2 which eats money,my S6 has been the most reliable car I have ever owned.
It has now done 220000 on the original clutch, exhaust, engine and gearbox.
It has now for the first time in ten years, failed its first ever MOT.
But getting it through this MOT has been a lot of work, but considering that I have thrashed this car for ten years, and done nothing but change the oil and service it, is not bad

My mates got a V8 S4 and my tuned RS2 spec avant wipes the floor with it, 0-60 I'm over a second faster than him and that's quite a long way in front from the lights.
The V8 is very boring to drive, you keep waiting for the power to kick in .
The point being is that I don't see any reliability problems with a tuned RS2 set up, I hammer mine all over the place and never even think about it braking down.
I'm sure with 500+ HP it would start to brake things quicker, gearboxes, drive shafts, clutches, CV joints etc.Comment

To be fair, before I started fettling with it and disturbing things, my RS2 was used as a reliable daily. In 6 months it never left me stranded, used for the family alot etc. The previous owner used it as a daily driver for 12 years and told me he only got stranded twice, once with an ignition problem and once with a water pump failure. It's been running 370HP since 1999
Since then... I've had a few gremlins, but that's what 2.2bar and >400HP get you. Other than this recent overheating problem it's only had 2 real problems, both related to the high bost (broken jubilee clip and broken MAF), both of which can be fixed with upgrades
Unfortunatley it just won't fit 3 car seats in the back, which we need for about another year, which means I'm drafting in a replacement family car to do very low miles for 1-2 years. It will be a C5 of some sort (definitely with a V8), later to be replaced by a C6 TDI I imagine.AUDI - saving Dad's from minivans since 1994
