Oil consumption / Head rebuild recommendations

Over the course of the trackday, I used about 0.5 to 0.75 litres of oil and this is a trend that I've been noticing of late, when doing 'demo runs' or spirited driving on the road, not enough that I'm panicing but it's certainly a little more than I've been used to replacing.

The catch tank was empty, so it's not going through the breather thanks to the swirl pot

I noticed that there was a puff of oil from the car after idling / sitting hot (my Dad was driving) - stem seals?

The turbo was checked and fitted witin the last year and I don't think it's that.

There could be a leak in the system but with the puff from the exhaust, that will not be the only cause.

I think it could be stem seals, as the engine has done 170k now and that seems to be a good innings for the original seals!

    Any other suggestions?

Any recommendations of somewhere to change the stem seals in situ (I'm also wanting to fit new tappets or clean the current ones at the same time). JP?

Prefer to do it in situ really otherwise there's a long list of things to sort

I'll need to compression test and leak down test it to confirm my theory.

You may get a surprise under cylinder head(i mean the block)5 engines opened 5 blocks needed new oversized pistons. The 6 is on its way. What is going on with them?170-230000km is so much on them?Or they had problems with boost leaks, home made tuning(wastegate etc),coils not working, what?I saw 2.5 tdi 600.000 km with 0.02mm wear on the top of the cylinder.AAN i found with 0.3mm

sounds similar to what david/s2driveruk mentioned when I called passed after work the other night. His does something like this after a spirited run.

i think mine is to do with flooding the PCV from binning it off several roundabouts. Didnt do it once on the trip up and back to Ipswich this week but who knows

TBH mate unless you get big plumes on initial start-up, it's probably more likely caused by worn guides than VSOS.

There's a swirl pot here for you David

If it is guides then is there any way to tell with the head still on?

Would not be relevant.Rings with 1.3 mm gap(new 0.4mm,limit 1 mm)and block with 81.3 upper bore resulted in 10 bar hot engine.Leak test should say more

Not sure, I would speak to a specialist, eg JP or Aelred.
                        A compression / leakdown test won't help you here I don't think.

Valve in guide play max limit should be 0.1 mm if i remember right and should be measured on the valve end not upper end.But a good hand should be abble to hold valve almost closed and ceck play at upper end with the head on engine. But why on car?if you get the front of the car, camshafts there are a fiew things left to get head off and do a propper ceck of head and measuring bores.

How can you do it in situ? theres no way to take up the spring in the valve springs to pop all the valve gear off with out having access to the valve feet right?
