    Oil Cooler Fittings

    Hi all,

I have a 51 row Mocal Oil cooler here. I guess it is worth sticking with the standard thermostat rather than a new sandwich plate. Or does anyone here suggest otherwise?

Can anyone tell me what the fittings are on the thermostat body?

Oil cooler is going to be situated low down in front of the main rad as it is a bit on the large size and I want to keep it low down to avoid any air lock issues.

    Many thanks

    Lee

PS, I know 51 row is excessive but I got it very very cheap (second hand but never used).

you should use a sandwich plate thermostat or an inline thermostat otherwise your oil will never reach operating temperatures during normal driving, and this will have a parasitic effect on your horsepower, not to mention form sludge in your engine.

Are you saying that my '95 ABY doesn't have a thermostatically controlled valve to control when the stock cooler is used? I am shocked as I always thought it had one between the block and the filter itself.

There is a thermostat in the oil filter housing.

Specs are (for the technically minded):

        Start of opening: 110ºC
        End of opening: 125ºC
        Opening Stroke: 8mm

Not going to answer your question... but could you do me (and the forum) a favour and take some pics while you are putting this oil cooler in? Am considering something in this line eventually and someone who has BTDT with pictures would be a true bonus.
          Thanks,
          Ck.

            CK, no problem.
Ben thanks for the thermostat info...useful to know.

Now, does anyone know what size the fittings are on the thermostat?

              Lee,

the fittings on the oil filter/thermostat body are M18, more details HERE to something I posted about fitting my 'baby' 19 row cooler, a lot has changed with the car since then and I have moved the cooler down a lot lower, but all the fittings and sizes listed are the same.

what dimensions are your cooler Lee?

If you remove the standard one - how much room is around there?

Huge and loads!! I removed all of the oil cooler and intake ducting tonight when I had the bumper off to get more air into my airbox (removed all that plastic rubbish around the headlight too). It leaves a gaping hole that will be even bigger with the standard oil cooler out of the way. I will run down to the garage and take some dimensions of the cooler in a minute. It is a Mocal 51 row one. Only just sat down after fitting the intercooler mod hose. Let me have a cuppa and I'll get some dims.

I am getting a 330mm by 190mm by 50mm cooler - I think it will be too big - but it was cheap so can sell it on if it is too big.
