this goes to prove my point un plugging the ecu Will not cause it to forget the faults or coding. they were still logged after it was removed.
its a bit like the myth of un plug battery to re set things!
i may be wrong on this and am by no means an expert but its my experiences with VAG cars.
Completely wrong, all codes are erased the moment you unplug the ECU or it loses power on pin 18.

          Woah. Hang on. Rewind back.
So Andy, you got the code reader on your car, and you got the same codes as you did on Tristan's car? So either you both have the same faults, or the ECU is the issue.

FFS guys, I thought everyone knew that when you cut power to the ECU the codes are lost. This is really basic stuff.

Andy, I am glad you sussed the LED trick. It's all I have ever used on my 3B, and takes up very little room in the car.

            Cheers stu

Interestingly one on that note, how does a scanner clear codes ? Does it just reset ecu ? If that's the case and we work on the theory of codes being lost when disconnecting the ecu why when I have disconnected on a number of times does it make no difference ?

Dmitri is the best person to ask about how exactly VCDS or a code reader erases codes. But it doesn't really matter.
But for those of us who use a trusty LED for diagnostics, it's pretty basic knowledge that every time you disconnect the battery, the 'motor' fuses or the ECU, the codes are lost.

What codes does Tristan get on his car with his ECU?
The codes cannot be stored on the ECU and moved from car to car. Unless you connect something like a 9V battery to ground and pin 18 on the ECU while you transport it.

tristan had the airbag codes etc, but yeah you are right not to worry now.Interestingly was on ebay last night and those scanners are stupidly cheap now, £10!!

after resetting the codes on mine last night (before fixing boost leaks) the only code that came up was a knock sensor, we cleared it, went for a drive , sorted boost leaks and no codes after that apart from the usual speed sensor
