It's a bit tight unfortunately. 2 options, 1 take the em off! 2 try and get the EM or DP studs off to move things around a bit.

Loosen the bolt on the engine mount and the snub mount bracket and lift the engine to gain some access.

Cheers guys, lifting the snub mooved it just enough and I've got the stud out now so refitting shouldn't be too difficult.

Thought I'd update this with a few more pics of the turbo:

The housing looks reuseable if a little battered.

Have now got the new turbo fitted and am in progress of putting everything back together. Noticed that something that looks like it should have a wire on it doesn't:

Excuse my ignorance but does anyone know what it is and whether the red circled tab should have a wire on it? For reference, that is the downpipe on the left and just to the right of it is the turbo oil line. It's just below the turbo and exhaust manifold, the pic is taken from underneath the car.

The tab on your starter is not used, it's left blank.

I believe it was something to do with when it's installed on a UR, it prevents cranking if oil pressure is bad???

Maybe I am missing something obvious, but how would there be oil pressure if the engine isn't started

That terminal is not used on our cars, IIRC it goes live when starting or to ground
and is used on some cars to energise something, point being, in our case nothing
                is connected to it.

I think it goes to the + side of the ignition coil on some cars .

That must've made one hell of a racket when it happened

Jeesh, that turbo was famished, not just hungry! Was it driving/spooling up ok prior to you realising it had been eating more than air and money?

Didn't have a clue, either did it while I had the stereo on loud, which isn't often or god knows!

Yes it still boosted to 1.6 bar!

Have it all back together now with all new fluids, just doing some testing to check for any problems/mistakes with reassembly.

Hopefully the intercooler will have caught the debris. Mine did when a similar thing happened to my blower. Might be worth a look inside and cleaning it out before it travels any further.

Might be worthwhile to have a look in the cylinders with a borescope to make sure nothing got through, and then clean out everything downstream of the turbo.
