    3. Doesn't anybody remember arc-welding rods? They are long and only about 1/8" diameter. Very easy to get in there with welding rods. Wire-feed welders aren't the solution to all problems.

    Just saying...
    1. If you look closely at the 3rd picture you cn see that the inside face of the flywheel has been machine away, if I'd kept the pin the original size, most of it would be hanging in fresh air. I've shortened it so it's flush with the step.

    2. There is just enough of a stump left on my old pin that it can be used to centre the new one, I just hadn't done it correctly when I took the picture.

    3. I'm using a TIG welder not a wire feed ( MIG ) welder. I could probably do it with the torch I have, just trying to make a difficult job a little easier

Well it seems I officially suck at welding blind in confined places so the gearbox is coming off now

True, is it possible to get narrow headed welding guns?

Thanks for the offer but looking at the underneath of the engine the rear main seal is weeping so the box is going to have to come out sooner or later.

Hoping to get it done and back together this weekend, we'll see how it goes. Never done a gearbox on axle stands before

You're not kidding, I never want to do that again! I even watched this on Firday for some inspiration

Now having done it, or 90% of it, I'm in even more awe of these guys that did it in 15mins

ask ross and sonic about when we was putting his engine in the rs2, that slipped off the trolley jack and landed on my foot, half my foot went a yellow/purplish colour, not nice.

I thought I was doing ok to do one in 3 hours on a ramp with scaffolding setup to hold the gearbox. It's all I can do to lift one of these off the floor onto the scaffolding 4 feet high. They are f ing heavy.

But then I don't smoke.... lol

Now that the car is back up and running, this is what I had to do to fix it. I took the gearbox out so I could remove the flywheel and drill the old pin out using a solid carbide drill

Then put in a steel roll pin

New sensor pick up hammered over the pin

                            And finally welded in place

Also replaced the rear main seal while I had the flywheel off as it was weeping. Think I may have found the cause of the broken pin too. One of the 2 sump bolts that screw into the RMS housing was missing, so I assume if fell out and took out the pin. So these have both been replaced and loctited in.

Hopefully the car should now be ready for a full summer of use

What a PITA. That engine and box have been in and out more times than you roll the passenger window up and down

Makes me wonder if someone has beaten my record of having things 'on and off' a car or not...

Glad to see its running Andy. See you on Saturday. Ian has promiced cake!
