Audi RS2 Turbo whine/failure

Surely if he is a reputable turbocharger expert then he would stand by his work with a guarantee/waranty.
Lets see. There was nothing wrong with it in the first place and it had survived countless 0000's km/miles and nearly 20 years of various abuses. He rebuilds it and it lasts less than a month. Hmm.....
Without dismantling it you are not going to find the cause. If you are certain that its not you fault and he is blaming you and not accepting any responsibility, you will need to get an independent report. The longer you leave it and the more you keep driving it the worse its going to get. The RS2 turbo has what appears to be unique components other than the service items which are common to the K26. If any of those are damaged it will be difficult to get replacements or they will be costly.
Call his bluff and ask him exactly how shutting the car down when hot would suddenly cause mm's of axial play in the turbo. That might have been a problem with oil cooled housings and old fashioned oils buts that why the water cooled housings were developed so that coking was prevented.
Can't comment on the standards of the rebuild. Ask him whether genuine KKK (Borg Warner) components were used. I would have thought that the play indicates a thrust bearing issue or perhaps even incorrect replacement of a component from the thrust bearing forward. Without seing inside its difficult to say. If you get it stripped you should be able to identify the components from the links previously posted.
Good luck!Comment

The turbo is now back with the guy who rebuilt it. He asked my mechanic for the wastegate as well. I cant figure out why he would want that?1980 VW Golf GTI Track Car

I hope he doesn't come back with "caused by your faulty wastegate..." Does sound like this may be the route he's going.
Good luck!

Ive just had a bit of an update for those that are interested.
The guy who rebuilt the turbo says the turbo has been spining to fast which has caused the damage. He asked me about any differences I noticed in the cars performance since the head and turbo were rebuilt. I told him it would only boost to 17PSI.
He seems to think that the something is wrong with the plumbing. Something like a boost leak, crack in the I/C or the DV been put in the wrong way around.

Even with a boost leak it's not going to fail in a month.
As I said before. You need a lawyer and independent analysis at this point, they are clearly not accepting any responsibility.Comment

Its been 6 months, not a month.
The turbo guy is being alright to deal with, though I can see it coming back on me . . Something along the lines that its an old car blah, blah . . .1980 VW Golf GTI Track Car

Well, it never boosted right after it was changed.
So, you can pressure test your car and make sure it does not have any boost leaks.
These turbos are incredibly strong though, they don't fail just like that.
You can abuse them like crazy, run them off the map, run them at 2 bar and nothing happens to them ever.Comment

With a boost leak it would reduce boost to spring pressure .6 I think (limp home mode)Ive just had a bit of an update for those that are interested.

Depends on the tune, many aftermarket tunes have this completely disabled unfortunately.Comment

The car is 100% standard.
They think they have found the issue, and it looks like it could be my fault.
What they found is a kink in the vac line that goes to the ECU. I installed a boost gauge around 3 years ago and somehow its kinked around and pushed up against the a water pipe for the aircon (RHD car).
I guess the ECU couldnt read boost levels correctly due to the limited air getting to it?1980 VW Golf GTI Track Car

If it can't read boost then it wouldn't have run properly at all, so that's not it. If it's running stock tune then there's almost no way that the car can over drive the turbo. Tell them to stop looking for excuses, accept the they messed up and get them to fix it FOC.
As prj says, these turbos get abused endlessly and don't fail even after 100,000 km. I run 1.9 bar boost and track the car yet my secondhand turbo has lasted more than a minute...Cheers'en, AndyC

If the MAP sensor doesn't get a boost signal, the ECU doesn't control the N75 WGFV and all you get is the mechanical boost from the WG spring, i.e. about 0.6 Bar. They are looking for excuses but that isn't it. They Fk'd up the rebuild. Done. Period.
