  • Black pipe to coil split (picture attached!)

    Right.
I have just taken out the cylinder head to find the coil nearest the windscreen totally split half way down,

Moreover – the plug 2nd nearest the front had broken – the small nipple on the top of the spark plug had got wedged down the side of the side and had to be removed with a pair of chop sticks!!

Ok, all put back together and there is MASSIVE difference in performance!!
But I hate to say it, the problem is still there.. Is this due to the massive split in the black pipe leading down from the coil????

There is a huge well of oil in the bottom of the pipe where it was split..

Pictures may explain better than words.

Thats possibly your problem, these are what insulate the spark from going to the cylinder head instead of through the plug. The reason they are covered in oil is due to the Rocker cover gasket leaking. Replace the rocker cover gasket (it comes as 4 pieces) and then clean out the plug recesses as best as you can, using a rag on the end of a screwdriver. Replace all the coil ends. These are the cheap bits!!

LMAO. Maybe, make sure you give the thread a good clean before fitting new plugs. Also make sure that you torque then down. If you dnt have access to a torque wrench then just recheck them in a months time or so. They have a habit of working loose.

VAG parts or Audi for the coil pack extension things, and GSF or VAG parts for the gasket kit. Best bet is to buy all of it from VAG parts IMHO.

Honahon, this was the same on my car at the first RR meet that Greg organised, the oil leak was causing a big missfire. we managed to improve things by cleaning out all the oil then Martinjs lent me a spare plug lead to use instead of my bad one.

Replace the Gasket and that bad plug cap. Phone Martin at VAGparts.

You still have to fit a new WGFV though don't you (Or clean your old one) then you'll get reliable boost control.
