I would start with cam cover off...
Nasty Noise! What is it?

Difficult to tell from the vid but what you describe sounds like a big end. You will probably be getting timing pull to from the knock sensors due to the mechanical noise.
David's car sounded very similar and had actually spun two bearings but good oil pressure so don't be guided by that.
Dropping the sub frame and sump is a fairly quick and easy job...
Hope it helps

Man, your luck just isn't in ATM
It is hard to tell from the video, but it sounds like either a rod bearing or less likely a little end.1990 B3 2.0 80 quattro.

Well thanks all. From what everyone is saying I'm pretty sure it's a rod bearing. If I could get it indoors right now I'd have the sump off, as it is it will have to wait..Comment

John. Sorry to hear you have yet more problems. I had that same noise, and Audi said it was a bad tappet, because I had oil pressure. But it turned out to be the big end bearing at the flywheel end of the crank.
The strange thing is we took the sump of and checked the bearings on the first four and they where in really good shape, so took the head of to check the bores etc. Just by chance the rear piston was on Tdc, when I put some pressure on the piston it dropped down a few mm, and there was the noise. The bearing had spun And the rest is history.
I hope I am wrong, but it dose sound like a bearing.
Best of luck. just wish I lived a bit closer. It seem you could do with a bit of a hand right now.Comment

I had a noise like that a few years ago, thought it was a big end, it turned out to be my alternator, easy check, just take the belt off in case, you may not be as lucky as me but you never no.Comment

I never did look into the cause of it either. It didn't use any oil, the level was always correct.
I did mean to strip the oil pump but never got round to it.
Was considering breaking it then i got a good deal on a shabby 95 S6 so robbed its engine.Comment

I'm sorry, but you have a bad rod bearing. I had a noise just like yours: http://koti.mbnet.fi/pro-ht/Audi_URS...king_sound.mp4
...and this is how a rod bearing look't like.

Don't run the engine anymore!

This is the purple car I bought recently
I'm pretty convinced it's spun a rod bearing, when the bearing spins it blocks the oilway so the oil pressure can look completely normal. It's going to White Cottage to get looked at while I go to Amsterdam on business for a few days
