    clearance issues

Refitted my engine and box at the weekend in my aby coupe. When I offered up my new turbo and manifold I've ran into some clearance problems. Manifold is Wagner rs2 cast and turbo is GTX3071 with .82 turbine housing. Basically the turbine housing is hitting the chassis leg meaning it's going to need modifying. Just suprised as expected a direct fit. Anyone had simiar problems?

Yep I did on my 3076 u could cut the chassis leg out slightly and weld in a plate shaped in a semi circle.
Or wack it with a lump hammer

Cheers nip. Yea it looks like I'm gonna have cut a small section out and weld I'm a plate. Just suprised as one of the main reasons I chose the Wagner manifold was i thought it would be a straightforward fit. Live and learn I suppose

The manifold is a direct fit but the beast of a turbo you're fitting is not :-D

I have one of these turbos, new and not fitted, but didn't realise that there would be a clearance issue in my ABY.

I currently have 034 engine and gearbox mounts fitted, would prefer to have my new oem ones fitted as the car would be more refined, but no time, and now I'm thinking about the clearance issues because of this thread.

@ JP, my Wagner exhaust manifold is a T3 fitting, as it the turbo. Is this any advantage to me from a clearance point of view ?

@ Tom, Can you post some photos of the other parts you have to allow you to fit the turbo to an ABY. I'm thinking of the pipe from the MAF to the turbo ?

Great thread from my point of view, thanks Tom.

On mine we shimmed the engine up a little. I think a new engine mount might work anyway.

Managed to tweak the chassis leg last night to give me a little more clearance:

Engine mounts are new 034 street density, I don't think shimming up the engine would have given me the clearance unless I jacked it right up.

I have the same hotside on my turbo and it just clears with no manipulation of the chassis, but I'm using the stroker block which is 16mm taller, so this gives you and idea of how much you'd have to 'shim' the engine mounts.

Yea makes sense, didn't fancy shimming the motor that much

How much would it raise the engine by moving the engine mount to sit on top of the 'ear' on the chassis, rather than underneath?

Yup, been there with my old coupe and GT3071.

New stock mounts and a couple of 2mm shims helped alot, only a few mm clearance mind you. Cornering there was still contact and vibration thru the chassis. Sadly it didnt last long enough for me to 'modify' the chassis as you have done.

Does anyone happen to know if there would be clearance issues if the GTX 3071 .82 turbo was used in a urS6 ?

                              Thanks for any information.
