It's fixed!!! Now onto next problem :-(

Found the blasted boost leak at last. Used Lee's pressure tester to find the hose which connects to the cam cover breather had a split in it. Cheers Lee.

One other thing, how do you adjust boost? I seem to be getting at the most 1.1bar. I have one of Pauls Home Frys and I've read that they should go up to 1.4, is this correct?
Searching throught the forum I found that adjusting the stud coming out of the WG adjusts the boost. Loosening the lock nut and turning the stud clockwise is what I've tried, is this correct? I've put about one full turn on the stud with little difference to boost. How much can you turn it? I didn't want to add any more incase I'm doing something wrong.

    Cheers chaps

Paul can tell you the depth in mm the bolt should be turned to in the wastgate IIRC. You should see the boost peak at about 1.3 to 1.4, at least this is what i see on a fried 3b.

    Cheers

don`t do that ... Boost is adjusted by the chip. Are you sure that you don`t have any other leaks ???

Adjusting boost in the WG is unsafe.

I'd say that tighten the WG for quicker spool up, but Paul says don't so better to do as he says when using his chips. Anyway you have a fault somewhere, so WG tightening does not cure the problem. Faulty WGFV perhaps?

        Or then take the advice:

        Sorry, I had to

The chips are designed to work with the stock spring in factory position - which is a 25mm distance from the spring perch to inner surface of WG cover.

You can get some quicker spooling by tightening down the WG spring - in sensible amounts, but the ECU then backs off WGFV modulation to keep target boost levels in check. This is sometimes observed as a flickering boost guage...

Tony, glad the kit worked for you. I had exactly the same leak in my breather system. Found it when fitting the pressure test kit!

For lack of boost I have had 3 things cause this on mine:
            - Fuelling problem (solved with new fuel filter and pump...you'd never think they would cause boost problems would you?)
            - Boost leak (check your hoses again at a higher pressure using the kit, say 1.5 bar...it has to run at this anyway so don't be scared by hose dilation)
            - Leaking DV (replaced it with a decent aftermarket one!)

You will need to screw the bolt in a few turns as i backed it off maybe 3 or 4 turns before i sold it. I wanted just about standard power for the sale.

If you have put it one turn in I would suggest an other two turns, when I had it set up right I was getting 1.4bar peak dropping to 0.9 at red line.

glad you got that prob sorted.

Wouldn't mess with the WG if it wasn't intended during the remap. Thats what the stetson wearing folk used to do and they had the cheek to call it 'tuning'. The ECUs control boost on the S2 and winding in the WG to recover lost boost is not sensible...find the real problem because if the cause is a leak you are going to kill your turbo or worse by messing with the WG! Be sure that if you do mess with the spring that you do not do it in such a way that the ECU can still protect the engine if something goes wrong and that your turbo doesn't work in a regime where shaft snapping might occur! The baby K24 in the S2 has something like a 5mm shaft and these do snap if you ask too much of them!!!

Lee - I get the impression Paul sold his car to Tony so if they are remembering the turns that they fiddled with - it will probably run better set up properly - It is worth setting up properly.

Is it the same car? Thats OK then if it was set up that way. People often play with these things not understanding the consequences.

                      Less of the cowboys m8,

As i said i wound out the wastegate bolt out to reduce the boost for sale as I had no idea who was going to buy it, It may have been some young nutter who thrashed the t1ts off it and knackered it then blamed me, so for safety reasons i turned it down.

easy enough job to set it straight

PaulM: Yep I did get the e mail about the wheels, you're right, they do look pretty trick. How much did you want for them? Do they include tyres? I suppose postage might be a problem too. I won't be doing that drive again in a hurry in one day

Paul N: You are right about the boost gauge, it does flicker a bit now and again.

Lee: Yeh, cheers for the tips. Please excuse my lack of knowhow with these cars, but can you clear a couple of things up for me....
WGFV - I'm guessing 'waste gate ........ valve. I know where it is but don't know what the abriviation stands for or what it does. How much are they? is it worth replacing anyway just to try?.
                          DV - Haven't got a clue?
Any other abbs you can think I might need to know.

Lee: I forgot, you mentioned you replaced your fuel filter. You have an Avant too don't you. What was it like to replace? Looking through the forum they don't sound too easy.
