      WasteGate Frequency Valve.
This is the thing that opens and closes your wastegate. The wastegate controls how much exhaust gas goes into the turbo and how much is bypassed stright into the exhaust...so essentially how much boost pressure you generate. The WGFV is the interface between this big mechanical valve in the exhaust system and the ECU.

      DV
Is dump valve, or bypass valve etc. If you had no DV in the car (ala things like Escort RS Turbo...sorry for swearing on the Forum), when you close the throttle between gearchanges you effectively block the intake system. But at the same time your turbo would still be spinning forcing more air in. The net result, without a DV is ultimately compressor stall (ie turbo suddenly dropping from say 100k rpm to 20k rpm...these forces can tear the turbo apart. Now, with a DV in place: when you close the throttle a vacuum is created between the throttle and the cyilnders. This vacuum opens the DV and allows air to circulate around the turbo in a closed loop due to the way it is plumbed in. This causes little distress to the turbo and extends its life. Standard DVs are fitted with diaphragms that can leak...this could be your problem. There is an easy way to test it without any tools. This unit can be replaced with one with a stronger diaphragm or even aftermarket ones with a piston inside for increased reliability. You can get Dvs that vent the excess air to atmosphere as opposed to closed loop during throttle closure but this can screw your mixtures in an S2 and is not recomended.

      Avant Fuel Filter
Yep done it. Its a PITA (ie pain in the a***) but I had a little trick with it that didn't require total fuel tank removal. Search the threads and you will probably see what I said at the time. Search for something like "Avant Fuel Filter Removal" or similar.

      Hope this helps.

Paul - not implying anything with the cowboy reference. Just know a lot of people call this tuning and charge people for the priveledge...cars run like ****..seen it many times!
That is, unless you ride a horse to work chewing baccy wearing a poncho? LOL

        Cheers Lee.

I've just looked at Vagparts and found that both DV and WGFV are only about 35 squids each. Might get one the WGFV and try that.
Believe it or not, I'm actually a time served mechanic. Served my time as a Jag technician so never touched a Turbo. Finished my time and then slipped a disc in the bottom of my back no allowing me to bend over cars for more than about an hour. Now doing something totally different.

Anyway, which would you recomend trying first? I'm thinking WGFV.

        Cheers mate,

Shame about your back..know a few people that had to switch careers due to this. I hope your new ventures are working out OK.

          I would....
...do a leak test at a higher pressure. This may cause air to pass through the turbo seals.
...take the dv off and test it quickly. Has 3 ports:1x4mm and 2x25mm. If you can blow through either one of the ports and the air escapes it is likely the DV is shot. Replace it if needed.
...last resort change the WGFV. Probably best to find another one to try first. Got to be an S2 local to you? I had a spare but I gave it to ChrisM some time ago.
You might have a leak somewhere so I would look at changing the vac hoses. Cheap for a tenner but you'll have to bend over into the engine bay for more than an hour I suspect to do all of them.

Lee no probs, not a cowboy but pretty much a DIY not sure if there is a difference or not

Tony, don't buy a WGFV as it is working fine, just set the boost as described.

Yeah still got the wheels. I will be selling them in the next couple of months, they include 4 very good tyres, I thought I would give Tony 1st chance as he bought my car, p. m some offer and I will see what I can do.

Lee- Cheers. I'll try another pressure test and see how I get on. Thanks for the info on the DV and WGFV. I might have to try the vac hoses.

              Thanks again,

              Tony.
